MROLIVERSMILES Posted May 4, 2020 Share Posted May 4, 2020 Hi there i hope you are all keeping safe, i am trying to find out the best setup on my defenders 90 puma xs and x tech, the rear shocks have gone on the x tech and i am looking to put 2 sets of shocks and springs with a 2" lift, but the cars are mainly used on road, looking at old man emu or bilstein kits but wanted too find out on here which brands people have had no issues with. thanks Oliver😊 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I get and 1" lift to take up the weight of a winch or the same to fix a 110 SW saggy back end or to fit 33's with better clearance. Oldman emu are very good but again I've heard them regarded as a bit hard. Personally I have pro comp but but they are not widely liked these days and I've seen a few break needlessly. I looked for new suspension for my Puma last month, still had the original ones. I looked at Bilstein, Koni & Fox. After looking at reviews & talking with mechanics I bit the bullet and went for the, more expensive, Fox shock absorbers. I reused the original springs, nothing wrong with them. Handling is better and the puma takes the bumps and pots much better now, certainly at a speed (> 30mph), but don't expect a range rover! It's still a Defender. I like OME but they are a more harsh shock than some. Truck is getting Fox during the rebuild which will mean the ride can be tuned to your exact taste. Snagger Posted May 6, 2020 Share Posted May 6, 2020 The 90 XS suspension is already overly firm, which gives choppy handling as well as a less comfortable ride than it should have. Twin dampers are going to make it unbearable. I imagine the XTech has exactly the same suspension but even less body weight, making it even worse. For a road going car, a suspension lift is of purely cosmetic effect, but will come at the expense of handling and comfort, and will also exclude you from more car parks and garages as it’ll be too tall to fit through entranceways. It’ll also be markedly more difficult to get in and out of, to load, to connect a trailer to, exclude more trailers (pitch angle of the trailer becomes prohibitive) and have slightly worse fuel economy. To lift it safely, you’ll need longer dampers, new mounts for the dampers, longer brake lines, longer panhard rod, castor corrected radius arms (which are generally far weaker than the original arms), cranked trailing arms, wide angle yolk prop shafts. And it’ll still handle worse. Unless you fit bigger tyres, it’ll look odd, but those tyres cost a lot more and will further worsen handling, performance and fuel economy. That is a lot of expense and compromise for an aesthetic effect, one that will scream to those in the know “all the gear, no idea” 😉. Unless you have a well defined need for such mods, they are far from “upgrades”. They sit firmly in the downgrade camp, like incorrectly marketed and knowingly missold “heavy duty” components for normal type use. You’d be far better off fitting some standard height but more compliant dampers and perhaps springs that give a better ride at the same height. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also, in the item descriptions, I see there's a 'Parameter' line item - what does this mean, as the parameters are different for the two different shocks? Thanks very much!
