Thoughts on how and were Ineos will sell the Grenadier

When I asked the question on the 2B Prototype Tour, I was told that the announcements would be shortly, (partly as they are taking refundable deposits in October 2021). From the discussion, each country may have a different solution, depending on what distribution/servicing networks are available.

Some quotes on the Ineos Commercial Director in this Australian article:

Quote

Tennant says key to proving to his customers that the INEOS Grenadier is tough enough to rival the 70 Series is putting experts like farmers and miners behind the wheel.

While developing the go-anywhere INEOS off-roader, instead of going it alone the 4x4 start-up teamed with experts like Magna for engineering, BMW for the powertrain, Carraro for the differentials and Recaro for the seats.

But experts, once again, will hold the keys to the Grenadier's breakthrough Down Under, according to Tennant.

Instead of investing heavily in dealers and outlets, from 2022 Grenadiers could be sold in remote locations by agricultural machinery dealers, off-road specialists or 4x4 accessory makers.

According to Tennant, discussions are already underway with ARB, Pedders and Brisbane's Minecorp.

“We really want to work with these guys. They have a massive following and we love what they do already.”

As part of the novel arrangement, third-party automotive businesses could develop accessories like aluminium trays, ’roo bars or mining equipment for the Grenadier and, in return, they may be offered the chance to sell the Grenadier on a commission basis.

“It's about respecting how much expertise there is out there and working with like-minded people for a mutual benefit,” said Tennant.

In Australia, Retail outlets currently include

Purnell (Sydney), John Oxley Motors (Port Macquarie), and Frasers (Newcastle) in New South Wales.

Victorian outlets include Brighton Automotive Holdings (Astoria, Melbourne), Rex Gorell (Geelong), and Aaron Brian Motors (Shepparton)

Queensland’s network including SLRV Expedition (Gold Coast) and Carvana (Brisbane).

Tasmania has just one dealership signed to INEOS Automotive at the current time, Bucky Motors in Launceston.

So far, when checking their site, I see the truck is proposed in only 8 countries: Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, UK and US. Many, many countries are missing and after several years of teasing it is worrying to realize Ineos doesn't seem to have dealerships agreements in more places by now.

I don't know for you, but it's impossible for me to consider ordering such vehicle without trying it. Before worrying about warranty, I'd like to know where I can test the beast. So far, there seems to be no option in the country I live in (CZ). Zero chance I'll cough 450£ for reserving it!

Also, we seem to know very little about key technical features such as average consumption, maximum speed on regular roads, maintenance costs etc. If anyone has details about any of this, please share.

I am still moderatly interested in replacing my 2007 Defender with the Grenadier, but the prices I read (from 60,000€ to 80,000€ in eco-punishing France) make me reconsider the new Defender (maybe not a brand new one) as an option.

We are still quite early in the development programme for the Grenadier; there are no retail sales until July 2022 and those statutory details will probably not be finalised until very near to public launch. At the 2B presentation, I was told that the current vehicle is overweight, with the target being 2400kg, and current weight being nearer 2700kg. Weight loss here and any aero changes will alter fuel consumption quite a bit.

Ineos have been very brave showing the vehicle so widely and providing such detail as they have. Older manufacturers are very careful to minimise the details that get out before launch, as they tend to ruin the sales of the vehicle being replaced/updated. Ineos did not have a market presence to protect, so being able to test in plain sight was seen as an advantage.

Looking at some of the social media, I am wondering whether potential owners are starting to suffer from publicity fatigue, as information is drip fed. Certainly, as the US launch is delayed to 2023, (probably due to JLR's legal action on trade marks), I have seen some evidence of anger from too much teasing.

Well, I'm one of them! Just today, I recevied another email urging me to sign up and pay 450€ although the car isn't available in my country yet!

If Ineos doesn't offer more meat in their messages, I don't know how long I'll be showing interest.

I've just driven past an ineos dealership. All branded up ineos and grenadier.

I was driving, so no photo. I didn't see any vehicles either.

I wasn't expecting them so soon.

The Grenadier is now officially off my short list to replace my 2007 Defender.

The test drive (carried out by an expert profesional driver) was very good and the car has many nice features. But:

- The shape isn't really good-looking (when facing it, it looks heavy, unlike the Defender)

- The fuel consumption is crazy (about 12l/100km for diesel and a whooping 15l/100km for petrol) is making it a dinosaur in today's world.

The New Defender is increasingly winning my heart. I see so many on the road around here (Czechia), I trust they are winking at me!
