They leak through the free-spool lever Lots of easing oil, gentle warming and application of plumbers freeze spray. Given that mine hasn’t been used since 2008, but not submerged since the previous owner rebuilt it, I don’t know if mine will be affected. Stellaghost Posted August 18, 2020 Author Share Posted August 18, 2020 (edited) Stripped winch down to its component parts and cleaned the tin worm has been a little excited on a few of the parts but nothing that cant clean up All back together to check freespool out working ok now it would appear that just enough surface rust was causing enough friction to stop things working all in all very happy not too bad considering I've had it around 25 years and this is the first time I've stripped it down plus I dont know how old it was before that So just clean up and grease up and job sorted also have a new decal kit coming over from America couldn't track anything down over here regards Stephen Edited August 18, 2020 by Stellaghost 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mine was free but a bit notchy it's a rear winch and mounted just inside back body so is protected from the weather there was a tad of surface rust on it but once removed and greased lightly it now works fine the only test for mine was if it's in freespool I should be able to turn the drum and I couldnt if your freespool lever operates smoothly (freespool gear moves sideways when disengaging if this is stiff then it will also be stiff to turn as surface rust will effect it in both planes of travel ) through its cycle it should be ok as it's either free or engaged with the splines on the casting my specific problem was the spool bush surfaces had rust on them and this was dragging on the plastic spool bushes and therefore preventing the drum turning unless under power from battery hope this helps regards Stephen 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maverik Posted August 20, 2020 Share Posted August 20, 2020 I find putting grease in these planetary units doesn't really coat the gears, especially as they always seem to let some water in. However two problems have arisen 100 foot of 10mm rope all be it not wound on under load is almost too much for the drum any bunching will cause damage A 100 foot of 13mm rope on the front 8274 gives more clearance although will still have to be careful when winching so I may have to shorten the rear rope and have two at 50 foot each but I'll know better once rear is wound on under load the other issue is two shiny refurbished winches now makes my lightweight look like a bag of sh$te regards Stephen Edited August 24, 2020 by Stellaghost Addition 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Or the literal twist in refitting the freespool lever so that it is vertical with the drum feet bouted to a vertical face, 90 degrees from the standard arrangement?
