Another rev counter question

Recommended Posts

Fellas

first of all apologies.. I have read numerous posts on here now but I have confused myself with too much info.

I understand the gauge is a simple switched live, neg, and signal from W post of alternator.
However, the gauge I’m looking at has a switch on back for 4,6 &8 cyl.. and mentions wiring into the coil.. presumably petrol

Mine is a 200tdi,, does this mean I can’t use the gauge I would like to ?? Or is the a way of manipulating??

Petrol rev counters get their signal from the coil, so 1 spark pulse equals 1/4, 1/6 or 1/8 of a rev.

Diesels don't have that, so they use the AC from the alternator [W]indings which are 3-phase AC driven by a belt that's some weird ratio of the crank speed... so yeah, you need a different gauge, or a different engine :P

just 1 switch on back Ralph, switch between 4,6,8

do need a different gauge then ?

Yes, t it being a different type

3 sliders on VDO gauge rear face & a trimmer screw on the side via a small hole.
