Chambo110
Fellas first of all apologies.. I have read numerous posts on here now but I have confused myself with too much info. I understand the gauge is a simple switched live, neg, and signal from W post of alternator. However, the gauge I’m looking at has a switch on back for 4,6 &8 cyl.. and mentions wiring into the coil.. presumably petrol Mine is a 200tdi,, does this mean I can’t use the gauge I would like to ?? Or is the a way of manipulating?? Ta Mark
mmgemini
Looking at your comments you seem to have a petrol type rev counter.
western
If it has 3 slide switches on the back put 1 & 3 up & 2 down. sounds like you have a petrol rev counter. VDO Vision do a 0 to 6000rpm one that will work with a diesel. https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/vdo-tacho-52mm-diameter-0-6000rpm-333015010
Chambo110
Thanks for replies fellas just 1 switch on back Ralph, switch between 4,6,8 do need a different gauge then ?
Chambo110
Bloody hell !!! £130 plus vat ?
FridgeFreezer
Petrol rev counters get their signal from the coil, so 1 spark pulse equals 1/4, 1/6 or 1/8 of a rev. Diesels don't have that, so they use the AC from the alternator [W]indings which are 3-phase AC driven by a belt that's some weird ratio of the crank speed... so yeah, you need a different gauge, or a different engine
Chambo110
To save my marriage I’ll go for the gauge. Although I do love a v8 🤔 thanks chaps
