Ed Poore
Err, I won't be going to look at this then... It's just down the road from me, only half a tonne so still leaves ~1.5t payload, 7m reach and just shy of a tonne lift on first extension, over half tonne at full reach. And I definitely didn't go and measure up the 6x6 to find it would tuck reasonably neatly behind the cab with only a foot or so sticking out above the top

But I agree the T244 is much better option. As I've said before I think I could make any of the above work (I'm a boatbuilder so used to small alkward spaces) but it'll be finance's that kill the truck idea. Mike Its not really in the same class as a 101 ambi so not a good comparison for a smallish off road capable camper. The TGB20 is almost the same size as a T244 giving it similar storage and access issues with less payload (Only 2 tonnes for a vehicle that size!), the complexity of a 6X6 with similar speed (In similar fashion to the Volvo you can change diff ratios and there are transfer case kits to allow a 58mph cruise.) with worse fuel consumption, less parts support, no power steering, a much worse cab than the Leyland, no standard winch option and you have to build a rear body adding to cost (At the expense of weight the MOD workshop pods are very well built and drop straight on to the T244 with the advantage you can use the truck as a flat bed at other times). The TGB20's only advantage is avoiding extra license requirements if you passed your test long enough ago and a cool factor if that floats your boat. To be fair I'm only part way through watching the video but it looks like he's bought a 20ft shipping container and lopped the bottom off to make the bed for the camper. Assuming that then an empty 20fter is just over 2 tonnes so if you assume he's cut it in half I don't think you'd be far off on the camper shell so you're at over a tonne just for the shell. He may have just bought the corner posts and welded box section in between but still the corner posts aren't light. It's something I hadn't fully appreciated with the screw down twist locks I've got but the plate they go through needs to be ~1" thick for it to clamp down properly. Massive overkill for my purposes but unless I build a custom twist-lock there's no way around it because that be the standard. Even if I'm using thinner steel for the outriggers to bolt to there's still a couple of kilos of plate on each of the corners to make the twist lock work. So all in I wouldn't be surprised in my instance if just twist locks and plates for the mating side come in at 50kg before I even start worrying about any superstructure. steve b
twist locks don't clamp as such so you could fab something double walled (hollow) , or just have an upper plate at the right height assuming there would be other contact pads ? Nice crane , when you said 500kg I was so sceptical I checked on the makers site and it is indeed 520kg , so even with a subframe to fit the twist locks and provide the right strength both for the crane and 2nd pair of stabilisers you'd still have onboard load capacity ....when are you collecting it ? Ed Poore
The twist locks I have do clamp which I why I got them. They're intended for lorries rather than ships, the bottom portion is threaded so once you've locked it you can screw it down to clamp it. But they only have a limited range of motion so the plate needs to be about an inch thick minimum. Payload on the 6x6 is 2t officially but its a bit heavier than the "bare" shell it left the factory with. With the tray and sides on the back it was circa 2.2t with me in it and a trailer hitched but wheels not on the weighbridge with a GVW of 3995kg. Won't even risk going to look at the crane. At just shy of £4k asking price way to dear for a whim. Under 500 I'd be there in a flash. Under a grand I'd consider it. Over £3.5k not a chance. Wouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a thicker area for it to clamp on, without being 1" thick solid. Simple answer would be some ali chunks bolted in place? I but I have a decent sized plate of 20mm in stock and also the trailer guys down the road have a CNC plasma with up to 25mm in stock so there comes a point when the weight becomes a minor issue vs. simplicity and cost. At the moment simplicity and speed of fabrication will outweigh most things its only as @Bowie69 says that in my mind seems a bit unnecessary weight wise but then again keeping things "standard" is simpler. To buy new there isn't that much difference between that one and its bigger siblings, so the only new market tends to be fairly specialised. Mind you there are a couple of companies put them on Ifor Williams trailers, trouble is they don't come on the second hand market very often. FridgeFreezer
This is an interesting take on the fold-out idea in a 130, better than a lot of conversions I've seen: https://uncrate.com/osprey-1990-land-rover-defender-camper/
landroversforever
That’s a neat conversion. I think I’d worry about use in more extreme climates though.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of adding fabric to vehicles as I'd much rather be under a rigid insulated skin, but I thought the concept was at least quite neat and could maybe even be made in something more rigid.
