Even osram state not legal as they are not ece approved.

Who's checking?

MOT isn't concerned with e marking.

"Light source and lamp not compatible" really only come into play when a converted headlamps beam pattern is wrong (as they often are on led and HID converted headlamps) and on most headlamps we only check dip beam for pattern anyway.

I watched that vid a few days ago, when he said got to get some tools I was expecting to see a soldering iron & solder, thought he was going to improve the end terminal with some additional solder, wasn't expecting the result, I won't give it away You will all have to watch it.

Well..

On the recommendation of Mr Dangerous Doug I have bought a pair which he has bought and said are bloody good for not much money..

Not much = £50.12 inc vat and UK shipping .and ..that a pair !

E and dot marking etc etc

It does seem that anything 7" LR as he says carries a premium price go it ..the exact same for 7"mini is waaay cheaper.

At 50 a pair if they are half decent ill be happy ..and if smashed into a tree etc off road won't care.

I will do a report/ fitting/ and if any good or carp later when they arrive ..

🙄

I don't think they do them with the heating elements in the UK, I've never seen it listed as a feature...  The only UK spec ones I've see are JW Speakers which are crazy money:

:o

I am sure I saw them with elements at some point but I think you are right... On the Trucklite website, none of the LED headlamps have heated lenses...  https://www.truck-lite.com/27291c-2.html

Well, if you’re happy to give it a punt, why not?  Pleasant surprises do sometimes happen!  I’d be very surprised if the markings are legit at that price, and I’d expect a bad beam pattern, but let’s see what actually transpires...  As for the ludicrous mark ups that happen for LR buyers, yep - have you seen what some diff specialists are charging! 😜

https://www.truck-lite.com/27275c3-2.html shows as having a heated lens, but doesn't look like it's ECE approved...

That would be a left hand drive or flat beam version - DoT is US, as is the phone number at the top of the page.  Isn’t the raised kerb side beam pattern a legal requirement in the UK, flat cut beams being illegal?  I read that somewhere on the net, so it must be true...😜

Flat beams are acceptable for the MOT.

The headlamp needs to have a clear beam pattern with cut off, contained within the upper/lower, left/right limits.

All the kick up does is illuminate the nearside kerb, obviously useful but not an MOT requirement.

I've seen plenty of LED and HID conversions and some aftermarket LED headlamps that give a "torch" beam.

This is clearly going to dazzle oncoming drivers and why a cut off is needed.

Nakatenenga had a deal a few years back and they were quite a lot cheaper. Weighed up against new crystal lenses, bulbs, relay setup it was a still a step up to buy the leds but not as bad as the current prices.

Those were the first gens, as said by others, the second gen are better in a number of ways but still have the black spot in front of the car (which is one reason I don't want to go that way). The other being reported issues with visibility in dusk and some depth perception.

I borrowed a 90 with 2nd Generation Trucklights fitted.  Initially, I was very impressed with the clarity & brightness even if the beam pattern was a bit odd.  However, it was at Dusk/Dawn that I had real problems seeing with them.  Driving on narrow country lanes, the depth / detail perception was not good and after half an hour, my eyes were hurting!  In pitch darkness, they were pretty good though.

I had intended to buy a pair - but driving with them convinced me that the ordinary lights on my 110 were better overall even if not as bright (or 'bling') - and stuck with them instead!

There's something 'weird' with LED and HID lights in certain lights - especially in dusk, and when the road is damp - it seems to suck all of the light up and makes you think there's something wrong with the headlights...

I've been told it's because both LED and HID emit a very narrow range of light colours, whereas a normal bulb emits quite a broad range, so the latter will work better in all conditions, even if not as bright..
