Adjustable height support for something long you're working on? Like one of the screw top pipe stands?

It's a support for when turning things through the lathe headstock to stop them whipping about.

That was a great guess! Should have thought of that having seen the aftermath of someone not using one with about 2m of 12mm stainless bar out the back of the headstock

I did a little trial today with the welder, still learning!

 

I've got some 3mm steel on the floor of the garage that I picked up from a local garage, which was a miscommunication as I thought it was 3mm aluminium, you can guess my surprise when I went to collect it as it was 10ft x 4ft 

 

Anywho, it's been on the floor for nearly a year and I cut bits off it for various jobs but today decided I'd have a go at making a fire pit with it.

 

Template made from top of the range cardboard

 

I then cut it out and scored the fold lines and bent it in the vice

 

 

Welded it up

 

added some side bits, chucked some legs on and voila!

 

 

It's not straight, the welds are abit holey in places where the folds didn't join and the legs are tacked on as I will probably change the bits around the edge, but it certainly won't blow away as it weighs quite abit!

As I never liked what I’d done I had a go at improving it.

 

tidied up the side and cut a hole in the bottom with a slide out tray to empty the ash from

 

I’ll be making some legs out of scrap box section and maybe a shelf to hold some logs

And it’s done with log shelf as well

 

i sprayed it with heat resistant paint then distressed it with the grinder...it’ll rust but it gives it some character

That's come out really well! How did you create the folds? Angle grinder then a bit of heft to bring the corners together?

Yup, exactly that! 

Cardboard is great as it has movement if the cuts aren’t great with a template, but the funny thing is, steel doesn’t do that! Que lots of grinding and filling with weld to make a smooth edge

it just so happens it’s the sister in laws birthday today so it has become a ‘ oh bugger I forgot ‘ petrol station kind of present...I’m sure she’s always wanted one 😁

What you’re really gifting with petrol station presents is a lifetime of being the butt of her jokes about it, so she should be very pleased indeed!

I proposed to my now wife with a homemade engagement ring, I even made the box. 

In fact several of our friends and family have received homemade birthday gifts over the years, I guess I set a trend.

It's veneers of walnut, teak, mahogany, maple and cherry. All glued together at 45° then cut out using two holesaws, shaped by hand then dipped in epoxy.

I am also an admirer of Ian's custom dash, and I wish that I had the skills to do something like that.  So far, I've limited my dash mods to a Mudpod addition when I fitted an EGT gauge.  I'm surprised that you're putting the fuel gauge in the main binnacle.  Unless you're in the "Oh carp, we're nearly out of fuel!" situation you only need to look at the fuel gauge every hour or so, since fuel level moves relatively slowly - except in a V8, whereas the EGT can change in seconds, and be very damaging if not recognised immediately.  For these reasons I've mounted my fuel gauge in a Mudpod on top of the dash and fitted the EGT gauge where the fuel gauge normally is.

You make a very good point. 

Firstly, I have to admit that I read Ian's custom dash thread and realised the if I had a go it would not look anywhere near as good so I opted for the Mud console. I might have a go at a whole dash one day as a project at my leisure. 

Secondly, you are absolutely right. After 2 or 3 short trips I came to the same conclusion as you have described. I switched the guages round so in the main binnacle I have coolant temperature, EGT and a clock.
