Bertboy
Hi guys, just wonder if anyone could help please, I have a td5 d2. Have noticed a few issues with coolant, the top hose was still firm after it had cooled down but I noticed it had weeped coolant from where the top hose goes on to the rad. Doesn’t over heat and has hot air from heaters and stays hot it doesn’t go cold. The coolant doesn’t disappear in the bottle and when the cap is removed the level of coolant stays the same. I’ve bled the system countless times by having the bottle raised and using the bleed screw, also it’s only ever the top hose what gets warm, it’s had a new water pump, thermostat and tank cap, read so many things about head gasket failure and wasn’t sure where to go next, sorry for the long post thanks
Blanco
First thing to say is that the temp guage on a D2 doesn't reflect reality, that is to say that your actual temperature could vary quite a bit from normal but until it exceeds a certain limit the guage will stay centred, not helpful in these cases. The next two things I would check on are smell of exhaust in the coolant, or signs of gas bubbles, and the condition of the top hose. Recommend you remove the top hose entirely and check inside for delamination, it is quite likely to be age hardened and may have a problem. It is some time since I had a D2 but stick around there are one or two proper specialists on here who may have more insight.
FridgeFreezer
Just be really careful around the small vent pipe on the top of the radiator - I've seen 3 different D2 owners snap the little plastic pipe off as they go incredibly brittle with age
JohnnoK
Is the little pipe from the top right corner of the radiator to the header tank clear of obstructions? It should have a steady flow when the engine is running. My D2 Td5 hose stays hard, too, I don't think that's an issue as the system runs at over 1 atmosphere pressure, so if it is staying firm, I'd say it's still well sealed and in working order. I'd pull the top hose off and reclamp it with a smear of rubber grease on the inside of the hose for starters, and then run it and see. bear
That elbow joint is ally and known to "rust" and cause a leak. Griff
