davidlandy
If the tappets were massively out of adjustment on a 200 tdi, say .040 +, rather than .010 what would be the symptoms? would it cause: misfiring excess crankpressure forcing oil into the air cleaner more noticeable engine braking thanks Dave
JST
mine jsut made lots of ticking noise!
nige90
Lots of tappy noises and a drop in power.
western
would have thought it'd be down on power & very noisy on the top end of the engine.
Guest diesel_jim
Down on power... the engine would be acting very "asthmatic" as the valves wouldn't be open for long enough, or far enough. a bit like you going for a run, and only opening your mouth half way and taking short breaths. enging braking might be marginally better as the gasses in the cumbustion chamber won't be able to get out as quickly, so you'd be keeping the compression in the cylinder for a fraction longer. or is that statement utter cr@p? nige90
or is that statement utter cr@p? Sounds logical enough.
davidlandy
so if the valves are shut longer, is it possible that it could cause more crank case pressure to force oil out?
Les Henson
Don't think so. The cylinder is designed to hold the pressure anyway, It just holds it at a different time than it should. If you have excessive crank case pressure, then it's probably something EXPENSIVE! Les.
Tonk
excess crank case pressure can be blown head gasket, worn bores or broken rings.
davidlandy
fortunately the engines not mine! I think it head gasket
