CwazyWabbit
So for years my Defender 110 has been exempt from the London Low Emission Zone due to having a body type on the V5C of estate. It seems some magic has occurred somewhere to remove that exemption (to be clear I never had to apply for an exemption). I have been sent a PCN warning from them, you get one of these for the first time a vehicle that is not exempt is driven within the LEZ. This is of course odd as I've regularly used the vehicle in the LEZ since 2012 when it was introduced. There have been no changes to my V5C since I bought the 110 over 11 years ago (before the LEZ). Has anyone else had this happen?
reb78
Thats really bad. Mine was exempt too. Just checked though and now it is not LEZ exempt!
Snagger
Is that change for all cities or just London? Khan seems to be on a crusade to upset motorists.

No idea, I hadn't thought to check other cities previously. 11 minutes ago, reb78 said: Thats really bad. Mine was exempt too. Just checked though and now it is not LEZ exempt! Hmmm, that's interesting and worrying, I'd been hoping it had just been some sort of glitch with my records. I wonder how many have been changed? Have they changed the criteria? Checked my 1989 110 CSW as well, it's not compliant now, but London is never going to get my 110's presence
smallfry
I guess all yours are diesels ? Just checked my V8SW and its still OK. (for now) only have to pay for ULEZand of course Congestion charge.
CwazyWabbit
Yep, we're all diesel station wagons so were exempt...... At this rate I'll be looking for a V8.
Bowie69
There's a lot of people upset upset with Khan in London, there's been a massive expansion and tightening of restrictions with little public consultation. All while rolling around in a £300,000 5.0l supercharged Range Rover.
Simon Smith
Just checked mine as I often drive into London. 110 Tdi Station wagon still showing exempt at the moment, but I guess I'll have to check every time I go now.
Bowie69
My main vehicle is fine (being petrol), I just checked it, but then noticed this wording on the checker at https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/ : That doesn't bode well for the future, will classic be banned because they may harm a pedestrian, or not have good enough brakes? Gotta wonder how all the trades are going to cope with their diesel vans which are now worthless in London, so no point selling them, but can't go to work without a £12:50 charge(!) CwazyWabbit
I believe that is related to the HGV's that as well as meeting emissions have to have extra mirrors and barriers to stop cyclists going under the wheels. 1

92a
My 1989 TD 90 has always been a car and LEZ exempt but now comes up as not meeting the requirements but luckily the series 2a is classed as historic so can even go into the ULEZ, Edited May 29, 2021 by 92a Splleing
reb78
This is quite a big deal for me. I am not sure what to do about it. No announcement has been made about changing existing exemptions and it hasn't reared its head (until this post) due to lockdown.
oneandtwo
Must be engine related as my Puma 90CSW is exempt and checked my old 2006 TD5 CSW and that is still exempt.

Yes, I believe we are all running TDI's. Any commercial vehicle with those engines will be subject to the LEZ however 'cars' are not and Station Wagons are classed as cars. There has always been confusion over Land Rovers due to some dealers lazy way of registering them all as the same body type. Mine however had the correct body type of estate. It does seem worded to be able to be applied to any vehicle they choose without future rewriting. It bodes ill for Londoners and those who have to drive in for work. Khan is Labour - they don’t like people who work for a living, especially tradesmen and other working class folk. They only like students, benefits claimants and woke middle class housewives. 😉 I saw something about this a week or two ago in the press, talking about changes to LEZs in Bristol and a few other cities, so I had a look at those and London. It seems that vehicles registered in the historic category (ie road tax exempt) are still not charged for LEZs, but will be charged for the ULEZ and congestion charge like any others that don’t pay LEZ charges. How long that’ll last is anyone’s guess.

Exactly the same for me a CSW registered as an Estate. Was exempt, now not. When I am at work, I live just a few miles north of the LEZ, I often needed to drive into it. I also have relatives that live within it.
reb78
Read to the bottom - https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/low-emission-zone/vans-minibuses-and-specialist-diesel-vehicles I am pretty sure we should still be exempt. Whats your seating setup Barry? My benches are no longer in the car and the seats are not original (RRC in the front and freelander rear row) - I wonder if they are going to be silly about that! I have all of the original seats though.... Edited May 30, 2021 by reb78
western
From the link posted by reb78 ----- Quote The following vehicles are not subject to LEZ as they are classed as 'estates': Defender, 88, 90, 109 and 110 station wagon variants up to nine seats inc the drivers Quote For models registered before 1998 - register your vehicle with TfL with suitable photographic proofs showing all sides of the vehicles with all doors open which clearly shows the entire internal seating arrangements. CwazyWabbit
Mine aren't currently fitted as I usually have my dogs in the back. There's an option to provide photographic evidence of all the seating for pre '98 vehicles, but they state no DIY seating and that they should all have seat belts .... This could be a pain in the backside.

western
if it doesn't have the rear side facing bench or 4 individual side facing seats that isn't mentioned. most normal estate cars only have seats for 5 inc driver.

Possible, my 110 is really a 12 seater but I removed the 2 x 3man bench seats years ago & have a cubby box in place of the front centre seat, so its been a 5 seat inc driver since 1996, seat numbers are not on V5 if its a private vehicle, only on V5 if the vehicle is used to carry fare paying passengers [hire & reward] don't think I'll ever take my 110 into central london, though it has been to relations in New Haw, Surrey. CwazyWabbit
Where it gets confusing is that Simon is still exempt, again a 110 SW with bench seats.
