Anderzander
Are you doing the clutch too ? This guy on YouTube has a lot of 300Tdi’s https://youtube.com/c/BritannicaRestorations
Jim Mason
Been watching his video's, they are a bit addictive... What pins does the engine brackets take, brought new as neither engine has them fitted.
Anderzander
Do you mean the lifting brackets ? if so both mount to the cylinder head on the 200 and 300 - Ralph (Western) shared some pictures here:
Arjan
Whenever an engine is out, timing and rear crankshaft seal get done regardless. Clutch is completely replaced. In doubt, slave cylinder is done, too. Once back in. warm the engine up and do a full service 1

Jim Mason
How do i back flush the cooling system? What methods work? Started cleaning the engine down yesterday with Diesel, most of the muck was coming off... Seems most of it is road film, engine never lost any oil according to previous owner and belives it came from else where... prop shaft seal etc.
Nonimouse
Hose pipe in all the coolant orifices - if you do this when changing the P gasket - you avoid getting lots of crud in the water pump housing Don't use Diesel, use gunk or similar
Jim Mason
Where can i get some from at the right price? Use Diesel as i get it from work on the sly, shifts through the crud with ease
Peaklander
Google the Gunk, as it’s available widely. I think it’s even available mail order.
Bowie69
Traffic film remover is wonderful stuff..... Oxalic acid in the cooling system is fantastic and cheap on ebay, often sold as wood bleach. 2
Nonimouse
If you look at it and go through , in your head, everything minor that can go wrong, be a pita and should be part of the regualr maintenance programme. Replace nuts and bolts that look iffy, jubilee clips etc - and make a list of what you didn't change that you need to change as and when you have some readies

Presume traffic film remover is to clean the block...
Bowie69
Yep, works great with the engine running , as it gets everywhere and the heat helps it work. And yes, TFR for the oily outside 1
Jim Mason
Weather gone nasty on me, need to work on engine in garden umder a gazebo. Engine is outside, covered up, how long can i leave it like this?

It is never too cold to work on engines -even to the point of scraping ice off the tools, you just need to work harder to maintain circulation. 1 hour ago, Jim Mason said: Engine is outside, covered up, how long can i leave it like this? Depends how disassembled it is, whether you have plugs all orifices (plastic bag and cable tie round inlet, get creative with anything else that means moisture can get in), and how well covered it is. Personally I'd just get on with it and get it in there and running
Jim Mason
Thats what were doing, just ordered a 3m x 3m gazebo, and portable gas heater. Going to lay boards down on the grass and strip it to hell
