flathatmat
Hi all, The turbo on my Defender 300tdi requires replacing. Can someone tell me what are the options or any recommendations from others. Is it just a case of buying a replacement or rebuilding the original? If so where from . Thanks in advance
cackshifter
You can obviously just replace it. There are rebuild kits but because you can't balance them without a special machine, replacing the cartridge ie all the rotating parts is a more sensible possibility if you can get it apart, and that is normally the cheapest option. (Brittanica Restorations has a video about it)Turbos and cartridges are available as standard or 'hybrid' the latter being a tweaked version. Or there are replacement VNT turbos available. Depends on your wishes and budget of course.
Peaklander
Perhaps the simplest solution is to swap for a guaranteed re-built one. There are a number of turbo places that will give you an instant price on a like-for-like exchange. Pay the money and they will send a complete unit that they have rebuilt and you have about 14 days in which to send in yours. You pay a surcharge which is refunded when they get yours. Just Google something like "300TDi Garrett turbo exchange".
Snagger
There are a lot of dodgy rebuilders out there. I got done by one in Reading. Turbo Technics (Northampton, close to the Billing site) is the company to use if you want to be sure of a good job. JLR use them too.
