Deep 52mm socket for 10 spline axle

Recommended Posts

I have a 52mm socket for the bearings on the axle on my defender,  but it has the 10 spline drive shafts and the thick drive flanges and the socket is not deep enough to reach the nuts.

I have been using one of the cheap box spanners but I am not a fan.

Can anyone with the same axle arrangement recommend a socket that is deep enough and hopefully provide a link. Some of the ones on ebay look deeper than others so emailed sellers for dimensions but non replied.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Steve, it's the initial tightening prior to backing off where I feel the box spanner is a bit loose.  Also you get a torque to work to and I am just not good at guesstimating torque! With my little experience I just don't want to cock anything up.  Hopefully as I gain experience I will also gain confidence.

Hi Mike, I have considered that. I have also considered splitting and extending the socket.

I will see if there are any viable ones out there,  then if not I will get out the grinder and welder.

I think the nuts are 2" so a 52mm is a little slack anyway . The inner nut should not be tight against the bearing race inner ring , if anything a very small end float.

This should in the WSM . From a factory S3 manual 0.05-0.10mm end float . No specified torque to tighten the lock nut to the lockwasher and adjustment nut .

Well I've learnt something today, never knew about the DTI method

I made my key by heating up the end of some suitably sized pipe and then hammered it over a hub nut, been using it for 30 years or so

As a rule of thumb with tapered bearings I always tighten to make sure everything is seated then slacken off and then hand tighten whi!st turning hub, fit locking washer and tighten second nut with box  spanner, then knock locking washer over, never had any issues, regards Stephen

I just use a tube spanner with socket welded to the back, and I’m one of probably the few that use the torque wrench method as described in the 300Tdi WSM. However, I did find the inner nut setting a little low so after some experiments came up with a slightly higher torque value that works for me. Locking nut is still torqued to WSM specs. The tube spanner also fits the screw on caps of my MaxiDrive drive flanges.

Cassette bearing's in there?

No bearings are in the portal box, the hub nut is purely to keep wheel on the portal hub spline and wheel hub still needs a 30 tonne press to put it on splines, overkill, but who am I to contradict Mr Benz regards Stephen
