dreadnought110
Driving my land rover home the other day/month and noticed a light ticking sounded top end so I took it home and parked it up for a bit got round to doing a oil change and checked the tappets. All the tappets where equal slightly small but all even, nothing nasty came out the sump on the oil change. Drove it up the road and the light tapping changed to a horrible noise see first video. talked to a few people who suggested vac pump so changed that. This is the video after.. Had a listen with a stethoscope and sounded really like number 3 injector so it's a while since having any new or reconditioned so put a new set in this is the video after doing that.. haven't got any further just after suggestions. Oil pressures good no excessive smoke no miss fires and cold start is spot on Any ideas? Thanks
Maverik
Common ticking noise can be from the head gasket on 300's, Google 300tdi clicking.
Squirrel2
A blown head gasket would give a continuous ‘tick-tick-tick...’. that increases when engine is under load. This noise is not continuous and sounds metallic. Suggest taking the rocker cover off and start with a thorough inspection of the rockers and valve springs. Have you tried using a sounding stick to try pinpoint the source? Bill

Bill Had the rockershaft out checked the little caps on the valve springs, removed and checked the pushrods for damage or bends and redid the tappets again no big gaps no rough running.. Next thing I'm trying is remove the vac pump and blank it off (just to try it) and changing the lift pump did try a stethoscope that's how I came to thinking the injector was at fault. steve b
I wonder if it's the FIP ? If the lift pump is a bit erratic flow wise ,or there is an air leak between tank and FIP inflow , the FIP can rattle/tap like it's about to grenade with the engine still sounding fine and even . The irregular nature of the noise sort of supports that ? Vac pump issues are usually continuous and directly linked to rpm . Steve
dreadnought110
Found it hopefully little end on cylinder number three... weird how it made the noise though...
