Filbee
I wonder if anyone has come across this issue before? I've just had a well known national windscreen fitting company out to fit my windscreen and rubber. Brand new Pilkington screen, brand new Landrover rubber seal. This is what I'm left with
Filbee
It's like the seal is too big. You can see it's kinked in the top corner on the inside and the seal isn't pulled in properly on the outside. I'd have asked him to take it out and have another go but this is the third screen they have tried to fit. They broke the other two... At least I can drive it over the weekend so I asked him to leave it for now. Any ideas what's caused this? simonpelly
Can you take a more front view of the picture of the windscreen and rubber from the outside? Wondering if the rubber has been put on the wrong way around? Just a thought? Simon...
simonpelly
And of course the obligatory question, which vendor for the seal? Genuine?
Filbee
It's fitted the correct way round, and it's a genuine, brand new LR seal and a genuine Pilkington screen. It's almost as if the seal is too long and it's ended up being bunched up in the last corner. Does anyone know if we're any differences in the seals over the years? Did they change when the Puma was introduced with it's vent-less bulkhead? Mine is a late Td5 if it makes any difference 🤔 Edited May 31, 2022 by Filbee
western
Part number has been updated, https://new.lrcat.com/#!/1235/674/675/180/2402 but doubt there is any difference in seal overall size, only changes to screen was thickness 5mm down to 4mm, & clear or green tinted & heater elements in later vehicles, I think the fitter just didn't do a good enough job. miketomcat
I've fitted several windscreens and never had that problem. How is he trying to fit it? It looks like he's managed to stretch the rubber which shouldn't be possible with the string method. I've always soaped it all up put the rubber on the screen with string in the body slot of the rubber. Then lay the screen in place with the string ends inside, with gentle pressure on the outside pull the string ends (easier if you do one at a time but remember to hold or tie off the other one). Some times a spatular is needed to tease the rubber and a flat palm thump with extra soap can help a stubborn area. Once in, check the seal all round and a gentle thump all round to make sure it's seated. Mike
Eightpot
That's just badly fitted - They're an easy screen to fit if you do it right using the string method, pulling from inside the car using plenty of lube and gentle pressure and thumps from outside. As there's no filler strip to pack the seal out its a tighter seal than most and its important to do the thumps, lube and manipulation constantly or the glass doesn't sit fully in the seal groove nor seal sit in the frame, and when you get to the last corner there's not enough gap and you either have to give up and start again or force the seal till either it or the glass gives way. I've never found issues with any brand of seal or glass, in fact my preference over the years has been britpart seals which always go in very nicely so should be no excuse with a genuine one. Snagger
I’d have them refit it urgently as that kink will soon tear or at least deform the seal permanently.
Filbee
It's all rather disappointing! To be honest I've a mind to get a local independent fitter to try and sort it out. There's one who seems to do a lot of plant and machinery with traditional rubber seals so he will hopefully have a better idea of what to do! I've got a decent second hand seal so not too worried about that one being distorted. I just can't work out how they got it wrong 3 times now! simonr
It looks just like my first go at putting in a screen! It's trickier than it looks - even after you've followed the soap / string instructions! Eventually, I gave up and got a grown-up to do it (local Land Rover specialist). It took him less than five minutes and he made it look easy! I've seen Auto***** make a pigs ear of it on a vehicle at work - I think this type of seal is rare these days, so the fitters don't have the knack. I would just take it to any independent specialist. The one I went to didn't even charge me - I think the value for him was the humour in seeing what a mess I'd made of it 🙂.
