Gauges

Recommended Posts

Hi. I just collected a converted pulse ambulance. The vehicle has been converted to 12v electrics.

On the drive home I noticed a small amount of condensation on the glass of the water temperature gauge. I went to wipe it off and in doing so noted that the bezel of the gauge was very hot. It was raining and I had the headlights and wipers on.

I continued to monitor the temperature of the gauge and noted that when the lights were turned off the gauge cooled right back down.

Anyone got a clue as to the cause? The actual gauge was hot not the water temp.

Cheers

Aleister

Is it the old gremlin of a bad earth on your headlights and the current is finding a path to earth through the case of your water temperature gauge?  The clue is that the gauge body cooled when the headlights were switched off.  Try removing a headlamp bulb and measuring the resistance from the bulb socket earth to the battery negative post.  It should be very low.
