Land Rover defender 3.9 v8 radiator with oil cooler

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

Im installing a 3.9 v8 auto into my defender. Im in the process of modifying the chassis in order to fit everything required. I have looked online but there seems to be a few different things come up and I don't know which is right. Does anyone have any photos of a defender 3.9 v8 radiator and the mounts on the chassis side including measurements as to where they weld to. Also any measurements or part numbers for the correct radiator for this engine with oil cooler please.

Thank you

What are you modifying from?

I'm fairly sure that I was advised a while back that the radiator which came with my 12J would be fine for the 3.9 V8 I'm fitting instead, so no changes needed (though obviously I need to change the chassis mounts). I am using a pair of electric fans from a Freelander as well.

I'm not sure there is a "correct" radiator with oil cooler, the V8 ones didn't have it, the intercooled TDi's had an oil cooler but a smaller rad to make room for the intercooler... a TD rad might do it but the pipes could all be in the wrong places for a V8.

I'd look at running a stock V8 rad and either tuck a RR bog-brush oil cooler in front of the rad or tuck a universal Mocal-style oil cooler in front.

I'm running a 4.6 with no oil cooler on a stock V8 rad + freelander fans with no issues.

Are you trying to cool engine oil, gearbox oil, or both?

I'm fairly sure the autobox wants a cooler, but I'm certain the engine oil can live without one as both mine do quite happilyand I've got the temperature monitoring stickers to prove t.

Im putting the gearbox on a separate cooler.  Ideally was looking to have the engine coolant and oil on the same radiator if possible.

I've recently dismantled a 1997 Disco 1 with 3.9 V8 and auto box. The radiator has provision for cooling of the engine oil and auto box, the cooling for that continued on into a bog brush type cooler. I'd very interested to know what exactly is inside that radiator. The engine is going into my 1987 110 with manual box, and I'm planning to use the 19J radiator with oil cooler built in:

The 19J radiator with oil cooler is (I believe) NTC6168 and is the one to the left in the pic. This is about the same thickness as the Disco 1 rad. To the right is the one that came out of my 2.5 NA diesel, and I believe this is ESR79. The 19J one is about half as thick again. My original one isn't going to do the job!

I'll be very interested to know which way you go...

Is that the ESR203 radiator? I'd be interested to know how thick yours is. The only V8 rad description I could find in terms of dimensions is here:

https://www.alutec.co.uk/?page=search&stype=completes&sby=sbp&spartno=10221&comps_manu=&comps_model=Defender++110&comps_spec=2.5+TDi+200+Hardtop&comps_from=09%2F90&comps_to=12%2F94

...which gives 47mm which seems a bit skinny. They also give a pic of the guts of the oil cooler:

Which is interesting.

Got a nasty shock the other day when I called my local radiator re-core outfit - my 19J radiator shown above would come out at £600 plus VAT, so that's not going to happen.

So what rad to go for? The only affordable all metal (or looks like it might be in the pics) ESR203 V8 job I can find is from Britpart. Anybody have any suggestions for a good quality unit at a reasonable price?
