Paddy
1991, 12j, N/A… Have been replacing fluids and filters. Next is the fuel filter but remembering last time it was a pain as the lift pump lever didn’t work to prime the filter. This time I’ve just tried the lift pump before changing filter, but no resistance from the lever, I’ve tried turning the crank but no difference. Lift pump works fine as, does the engine. So, any tips/suggestions of how to prime the fuel filter after I replace the element?
Hawklord
Whenever I replace the fuel filter on my 300TDI I always fill the new one with fresh diesel before fitting and have never needed to prime in the 22 years owning the vehicle.
Paddy
I did that last time I replaced the filter, it took numerous attempts at taking the filter on and off filling with fuel before it finally fired. Just hoped someone had a trick up their sleeve to save the hassle.
steve b
Fill the filter as you said and loosen one injector pipe and crank on the starter with the throttle pedal on the floor until it fires - in 15 sec cranks so the starter doesn't throw it's teddies Steve

There is a night and Day difference in the dieselpurgability (errr, is that a Word?) On a 12j and a 300. A 12j can be a person I'm not that keen on! Back in the Day I started with not doing the filter all the way up, free flow then do it up and use the vent on top of the base. Then cracks the (two, cant remember) small air outlets on the pump one at a time. It should stort now... but when it doesn't try the injectorpipes and/or all over again 🙂 The pump should work, it might be on top of the cam, but you have tried to turn the crank so it is Odd. /mads
Peaklander
Doesn’t the lift pump lever work the other way round to what you might expect? You actually push it down from where it sits when not being operated. Just a thought.
steve b
It depends on which type pump - Tdi style with unions on the top is down on the hand lever and the side mounted unions (AC delco) type the lever pulls up to prime Steve
Paddy
Ok, thanks guys , job done. First attempt was just filling the filter, bolt it on and try. Didnt fire. Tried steve b suggestion and away it went, I'll remeber this for the next filter change. Just another quirk !! Hand priming with the lever worked upto a few years ago. Lever parks in the up position but I can't remember if it was the up or down stroke that actually pumped.
steve b
Good to hear that it's sorted. full throttle opens up the flow in the IP with the DPA pump which all helps with bleeding. Steve
