Chris Bennett
Hi folks. I've a 1999 TD5 Defender. Amber ECU light came up when starting after not being driven for 5 hours. I had driven on partly flooded road. Checked ecu red plug all ok. Injector loom repaced about year ago. Tried ignition on off etc. Light not going out. No throttle response only tick over. Recovered Defender to home. Next morning went to start investigating. Started fine. No amber light. Throttle normal. Been fine for 2 weeks now using daily. I concluded possible water in loom effecting
Def Harry
Welcome to the forum. Had a very similar problem. Mine was caused by a break in the core of one of the wires connecting the throttle potentiometer to the ecu. The problem on mine was actually very close to the ecu, but they commonly degrade where the loom crosses over the gearbox/t-box. It may just have been water but personally I'd be tempted to go hunting in the loom to avoid getting stranded (I had intermittent episodes before I got stuck in tick over). Examine the loom, try to replicate the fault by gently moving and flexing the loom.
Chris Bennett
Hi Def Harry Thanks for the info. Will try from underneath.
Def Harry
Best way to do it is by removing the plate under the centre seat/cubby box. Ideally you need to be in the cab with the engine running so you can see the EML come on. Also check the loom close to the plug on the ecu as this was where my problem was but that is more unusual. Chris Bennett
Ok. I rewired a new section of cable from throttle to ecu. Passed new cable inside the cab. All working good now.
