Steve King
My brother has finally decided to follow my example and buy a Land Rover. We had a look at a low mileage 110 yesterday and the main problem was rot at the top of the bulkhead in the corners just under the windscreen. It looks like it can be fixed with repair sections. The seller seems willing to lower his price accordingly - but seeing as neither I or my brother can weld what do you reckon a garage would charge to fit them? Also could anyone recommend a decent LR specialist in the East Sussex or Kent area that could carry out the work to a decent standard? Thanks Steve

Thanks Steve My first advice would be not to fall in love with a particular vehicle and to shop around until you find one that does not need work doing, believe me I am in the middle of a project that involved me buying with my heart and not my head! Have a good look at the entire chassis, the floor area under the mats, seatbox, the under sides of the front doors as these are all areas of concern. A garage will be charging you something in the region of £25 per hour to do the repairs, don't forget that it may be necessary to remove the wind screen, not in itself a big job but a bit of a faff, then there is the painting on top. I wouldn't like to give you a price without seeing the vehicle but the cost can very easily run into hundreds of pounds, all of which of course will be + VAT! That aside if everything else is sweet on the Landy and it ticks all the other boxes then don't let it put you off too much
jpk
Hi Mine cost me £300ish to have both corners done. That was by Keith Gott in Alton, if that helps. JP
Pyrover
Just a thought, but if it's gonna cost £300-ish it might be worth buying a cheap welder and some metal and practicing until you can do it yourself. This could prove slightly more expensive but the next time you need to have any work done (and you will) you will have the tools and the skills to do it yourself, saving you money. Try and think long term, especially if you have more than one Land Rover to maintain!
Litch
Don't forget that brand-new bulkheads can still be had for around £250 and it is a DIY job to fit one as no welding etc is required. It is a bit involved and you obviously need to have the bulkhead painted before you fit it but no specialist tools are required, just a bit of space, time, a Haynes and some enthusiasm. Unfortuneately the days of brand-new bulkheads for £100 seem to have been & gone (glad I bought mine then) but when you consider that a rusty bulkhead is unlikely to be completely rot free even after repairs have been carried out a new one makes a lot of sense. I've done two now and would certainly do another if I had to.
FridgeFreezer
If you can't stick them in yourself then get a new (or good 2nd hand) bulkhead and stick several layers of decent paint on it in all the places that rust. Anything that involves welding will cost £££ from a garage and you're only patching up one bit of a potentially rusty bulkhead.
