Bubbles in the expansion tank

Recommended Posts

I've developed a feeling that not everything is as it's supposed to be with the Landy. So this afternoon I had a look at things and discovered bubbles in the expansion tank at wide throttle openings. Could that in anyway be normal or is it a clear sign of a cracked head gasket?

There's been no white or black smoke, not that I've noticed anyway.

It's a 300Tdi.

Bubbles on their own do not mean anything.

Is the LR over heating ?

Does the expansion tank develop pressure - ie when you open it is there lots of air in it ?

When you open the expansion tank is there a smell of exhaust fumes in it ?

Does the engine smoke ?

Is there water/coolant in the engine oil ?

Does the engine lose coolant ?

For your bubbles to mean anything at least some of these other symptoms should also be present.

What is the engine config, and type of expansion tank,

300 tdis for exanple have a constant bleed into the header that can make bubbles, nothing wrong its doing it job.

What are the symptoms and problems

Thank you guys! I turned to the forum looking for reassurance and that is what I got.

The symptom that I thought I saw was a small loss of power over the last weeks. I had a head gasket failure only 15000 kms ago so maybe I'm still a bit nervous. And as I looked in the expansiontank yesterday the coolant level was lower than I remember it and then I feared the worst. However after a run to town the level was where it used to be.

I think it's ok I will just keep an extra eye on things in the near future.

Once again thanks for your replies. This is a great community! :)
