wainford
Newbie help I have a 90 with what at first appears to be a classic transfer box oil leak symptoms, i.e. oil on the bottom of the handbrake drum oil spots on the rear window etc, however upon close inspection it is not EP90 oil but is ATF DX3 oil, and seems to be coming from between the main gearbox and the transfer case, I know from searching the forum that I can change the seals in the transfer case which I intend to do, I think that my problem is the output shaft seals on the LT77 Gearbox, does this diagnosis appear correct? The question is can the LT77 output seals be changed with the gearbox in situe and will I need the special tool for removing the oil seal collar and seal in the extension case, any other tip on this task are much appreciated. Regards Shaun…..
Gromit
Just had a look at the parts cat and it didn't seem obvious how to go about it. I had a workshop manual a while back. I'll see if I can dig it up.
Les Henson
You will obviously need to remove the transfer case to get at the seal, but it looks to me that the seal can be replaced with the box still attached to the engine. This is a picture of an LT77 gearbox in that same situation. Looks like you can drill a small hole in the seal, screw a self-tapping screw partway in, and then pull the seal out with a pair of pliers or claw hammer. It would be a good idea to replace the transfer case seal at the same time, you never know................. Les.
Tonk
if you change the seal with the collar in situ then make sure you dont damage the new seal when putting it in cos theres a groove in the collar which it has to pass over removing the collar requires a special tool
simonb
if you change the seal with the collar in situ then make sure you dont damage the new seal when putting it in cos theres a groove in the collar which it has to pass overremoving the collar requires a special tool Wind a turn of tape round the collar where the groove is to protect the seal lips. Remove tape after the seal is fitted.
JimAttrill
Getting the collar off is not easy, you need one of those split circular things attached to a couple of long bolts, a cross bar and another pulling screw. Not difficult to make if you have the bits. To get the collar back on you need a bit of pipe, a long bolt and a few washers. A job to be avoided if you don't have the tools or the bits to make them. wainford
Thanks Guy's for all the advice, I have ordered the seals and collar etc, while the transfer box is off I will replace its input and output seals, and also strip and rebuild the transmission brake, probably next week or the week after, I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again Shaun..... 90 with a Perkins Prima
