88 Nick
Hi, This is my first post so I hope I have put it in the right place. Lost drive in third in my ZF 4 speed auto box in my 88" special whilst trialing at the weekend. Expect the cheapest solution is to fit a 2nd hand box. Have heard rumours that there is a Jag box which fits and is stronger. Anybody know anything about this? Plus are all gear ratios the same in these boxes as would like to lower the ratios to suit 35" tyres but would like to keep the BorgWarner viscous box (great for getting up to handbrake tricks). Cheers Nick
Jon White
Gear ratios in all the landrover fitting ZF 4 speeds are the same. You can change the transfer box ratios if its an LT230 but I dont know about the viscous transfer box. Your best bet is probably to swap the diff ratios. Pyrover
The AJ6 lump (which started as 3.6, then went to 4.0) apparently uses a very similar ZF auto to the RR 4-speed (some people have run the jag autos behind LR engines). Try taking a look at this list of ZF boxes on Wikipedia, as it may help identify possible donor vehicles. Failing that these guys might be able to help answer your question, as they know about all things Jag related. HTH
will_warne
The ZF4 HP22 is what you've got fitted. The ZF4 HP24 is an uprated version of the same box that is quite a bit stronger. Parts are interchangable between the two boxes meaning you can build hybrid boxes (maintain original gear ratios & valve blocks but gain uprated clutch packs and oil pump) which is what I've done. The only slight differance with the HP24 spec box is that its 15mm longer due to the larger oil pump. Gear ratios may not change that much between manufacturers but you may find something. The problem may be that the shift point could be all wrong for your engine.
pugwash
some BMWs used ZF4HP24s and i spent a while down at the scrappy looking at suitability. i think electronic control would be easy, and as far as i could make out, the TC and Belhousing were interchangeable. The only thing i couldn't work out (because i didn't have a Transfer box) was whether the rear end was OK- the chap had boxes going for £30 so this might be worth persuing as a cheap way of getting replacement gearboxes

88 Nick
Thats great, thanks for the info guys, ive been given a zf hp22 so Im going to fit it in standard form,I rebuilt an lt 77 once and that ended in divorce, cant afford another so best leave the guts of the auto alone!. Another question though,my motors built on a galvanized 88 coil chassis (from designer chassis I think) down side is gear box cross member doesnt bolt out 90 style,I have an external cage over truck cab so out through the seat box could be tricky?.So 1, out with box and engine together.2 cut out cross member and get a removable one fabricated,3 take off transfer box and out through seat box. Any advise greatlully recieved, bearing in mind im a carpenter,ie limited mechanical ability,no welding/fabricating ability.
