But not with a 200tdi for a small price like the disco i just got , maybe i will just swap engine, gearbox and transfer case instead. bishbosh
The transmisison swap is definately the easier route. Just need a grown up to weld on new engine mounts.
jules
A disco shell and a Range Rover are basically the same only the panels are different
Steve Hiatt
Would you rather have a 1993 200 TDI RR chassis? I'm 'storing' one for a chap who only wants the engine and box. If fact the car is complete at the moment
bazza
No thanks, got enough vehicles lying around as it is. will crack on with the transplant some time soon, i want to keep the range rover chassis and body as i have modified it quite a lot and dont fancy doing it again. Currently running a VM 2.5 TD so the 200 tdi will be a nice upgrade. P.S. VM 2.5 TD, LT77 gearbox and BW trans case for sale, in good working order if anyone is intrested. Bobtail
Mate i think you only need to change the engine if its a 2.5 vm as the gearbox and bell housing are the same as fitted to 200 tdi's and the radiator/intercooler/airbox as they are the wrong way round on the vm
DEANO3528
Currently running a VM 2.5 TD so the 200 tdi will be a nice upgrade. Are you sure? 200tdi - 111hp and 195 lb/ft torque 2.5 VM - 119hp and 209 lb/ft torque I would prefer to think of an upgrade as the 2.8 TGV, rather than more of the same. The 2.5 VM is a good lump as long as it has been looked after. And as for the gloaters who go around taking the mick out of VM's and V8's blowing head gaskets: every 5 minutes I am hearing of another tdi in bits for exactly the same job. bazza
The VM is OK on the road but does not have the low down tourqe of the tdi, as i bought a complete disco for £200 with a cracking engine it seemed a shame not to pop it in the range rover. And it will incease the resale value if i sell the rangey, everybody seems to be scared of VM's, as demonstrated when i tried to sell the engine, not a single offer even though it was on several webistes and clubs for a mere £100ono!! The bell housing for the VM is totally different to the tdi, plus i want to get rid of the Borg Warner transfer case as it is seized solid, so a complete swap has been done, ta da! Note to self - tdi engine mounts are handed, dont weld them on the wrong way round!!!
DEANO3528
The VM is OK on the road but does not have the low down tourqe of the tdi, Hmm, I haven't driven one if I'm honest, but I would imagine they should be quite similar as the torque figures work out quite close: 209 @ 1950 for the VM as opposed to 195 @ 1800 for the Tdi. In my experience the Tdi in std trim couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding at anything under 2 grand hence why I fitted an uprated intercooler. Now that does make a difference! bazza
having used mine for a lot of off roading and used by brothers disco with the 200 in it, they really are quite different engines to drive with. On the road the VM was a bit quicker, but off road always struggled. What intercooler did you use? i guessing its quite an impressive up grade? DEANO3528
Put it this way, I reckon it's the best 250 quid I've ever spent on a motor! I got the replacement one from Brunel Performance, who advertise in our club newsletter. I can only imagine what the full width ones and charge coolers must be like. Rather than the gutless 200 I bought which was flat as a pancake under 2000 rpm, it now pulls from 1500 clean! I'd reommend oner to anyone with a Tdi. bazza
sounds good, may the next mod, need to get it back on the road first! Baz
Mark
Sorry for the thread hijack, but Deano, did you get the direct replacement version that is shown on the website, or a bigger one? Just curious ta Mark
DEANO3528
Yeah the direct replacement Mark. It works right well. As one of the first in the club to have one, it's been fun watching lots of our members nipping down to Essex to have one fitted, or disappearing with their motor at a show to have one fitted on site. They all say the same as I did too.
