Moving to Oz - Some questions please

90hybrid

Recommended Posts

G'day gents.

We are moving to Oz  (anticipate Queensland area) from the UK in the next few months - around June time - and just need a little info if possible.

On arrival we plan to purchase a suitable Disco or Rangrover to hopefully tow a largish 24ft caravan for temporary accomodation before finding a house to rent/buy.

Although we (missus & I ) will have international driviers licences I don't want to arrive there and find we cannot buy the vehicle / caravan because of some unforseen technicality.

So....are there any pitfalls I should overcome before arriving ie: We both have the standard vehicle driving licenses so is there a limit to what you can drive or tow Landrover + caravan wise or do the laws roughly follow what we have in the UK. (ie ok up to 7.5 ton.)

Also registering a vehicle + insurance, do we need to have a physical home address - Like a friends house in order to get it street legal.

What does this 'REGO' mean?

Looked at oz ebay for likely vehicles, some are ok most others seem utter carp, are there any other places to browse on the internet.

Wish I could bring my 90 hybrid along but as I'm not a resident I can't import it - pity as I have had it for 10 years.

Anyway....here's looking forward to your response.....keep those beers cold.

Hi,

what visa are you going out on that you can't import your vehicle? If you have a short visa then you should be able to import as holiday thing. If you have a more permanent visa (136 etc) then you should be able to import.

From my knowledge at the moment you can just exchange UK licence for Auz licence for about $60, though again, this may vary depending on your visa.

To be fair, I may be talking b*****ks as this is all theoretical knowledge, like yourself I am getting sorted for emigration and it seems to vary day by day on whether I am bringing my 90 along or not. I'm looking at a PR 136 visa (number has just changed though you need to look at DIMA website if you have yet to apply for visa) so mine is pretty clear cut.

Have you PMd Ali Read on here (Reads90) he took his 90 out about 2 years ago I think, he reckons it was not as hard as you might expect.

Thanks Steve.

Nice one and good luck in your move.

Food for thought.

Initially, We are going over on temporary visa's, look for work then re-apply.

(been to the various seminars in London, had interviews with perspective employers, been asked when we can start work....only to be told the 7 - 9 month lead time to sell the house, do the paperwork was not too attractive for the employers. So we have been advised to arrive, make ourselves avaliable then change the visa's. House is sold so it's time to make tracks)

Was led to believe you had to be a citizen in order to import vehicles, however, what you say does sound feasible as not everyone driving to Oz overland is a citizen and they have to bring their vehicle into Oz, so there must be a way of getting it there even temporarily....hmmm more reaserch required me thinks.

Regards Charles.

right Ok where do i start

Driving lincese

If you are on a temperory Visa (with view to getting a perminat visa) then you cannot drive more than 3 months on a Uk lincese (Even International)

You must get a Aus driving lincese. Easy to do . All you have to do is go the Queensland Transport Office (which are shops all over Queensland). Take a theary test and get 90% on the test and they then look at your Uk lincese and hand it back to you, and give you a Queensland Lincese. This is worth doing even if you don't have to, as in Aus they use these for ID. So you will be asked for it all the time. IE if you want to send a parcel aboard the post office will ask for you lincese as id.

Rego

Rego is road tax. But the differance in Aus it that this will inculde 3rd party insurance called CTP. This is bought from the Queensland transport.

Rego goes on amount of pots in the engine. In other words a V8 is more expensive than a Tdi. You then get fully comp if you want like you would in the Uk

When you buy a car in Aus you will have to pay 2% of the purchase price to the Goverment when you put the car into your name. This is all cars new and old. Also to buy and sell a car it has to have a roadworth (MOT, but a joke compaired to it, most Aussie have a fit when you tell them what they do to our cars in the uk when they MOT them) But once you have bought a car and got rego on it . You will never ever need to get another Roadworthy (MOT) ever again while you own the car . :):) so no MOT every year. But this is Queensland rules.

You will need a home address to put the car into same as you would need to do in the Uk. (remeber Aus once belonged to us, so alot of the laws are the same as in the uk as we gave them to them :) .)

Cars

The Discos and rangies are a bit more expensive here and the models are a bit differant. But rust is not a word here. I can't belive what my 95 Disco looks like under it. It still has the black paint on the chassis from the factory. Total differant for what the 90 looks like under it . also been stripping my Disco and all the bolts just come of easy. As i said they don't know what real rust its over here.

Bring you 90 Hybrid. I was not a resident when i bought mine over.

You have to have owned the car for 12 months and lived with it. So send of the forms to Camberra and they will give you permission to import the car. They crush the cars on the dock side if they don't have this. But there again most if not all shipping companies will not ship with out this anyway

You will have to clean it and clean it again . And 99.9999999999% of times they will clean it at the dock it arrives at and charge you to clean it again ($400)

Once here the customs will charge you 10% GST (VAT) and 10% import duties. This price is surposed to go on what you paid for the car and then they take off depending how long you have had it. Well under this we thought we would get charged $7000 in tax . But they decided to Value our 90 . So they got a Valuer in and he to9ld customs that the 90 was worth $7000 in total so we had to just pay $1400 to them. :):) First time i have ever been pleased that someone has given me a under value for my car :) Then once this is all done they give you the car. Then you have to get a chap to come around and inspect the car to make sure it meets the ADR (Austrain Design Regulations) Which was the bit that worried me for about a year before. Because if they say you need to change somthing then you have to at your own cost. Any way paid this bloke $275 and 3 mins later he says done , your car is fine , just need to put the plate on.

all they checked was the engine was the same as what was on the paperwork and that the glass had Kyte mark and the seat belst had the tag on them. And that was it. Then off to Queensland transport to get the rego. Easy Bl**dy wish we had brought the other 90 with us now

This is the 90 in the UK

Thanks for your kind advise.

Nice motor you have there. I followed your antics when you first arrived in Oz and watched the videos, gave me/us a lot of encouragement so, then seeing your house just tipped the balance....thanks for that.

Mine is also a mohair soft-top, how are you finding the heat under that? also got a bikini top and a truck cab.

Couple more questions if you don't mind?

Did you container it over there or what? costs? timing? if RORO then security wise were there any issues? who did you use?

I'm planning on bringing a sankey trailer so may just put the whole lot into a container, but that depends on cost v insurance risk.....lots of expensive tools need to come too.

Just shout if you want some bits from here I don't mind collecting / liasion with Jules etc.....but no bl@@dy v8s.(looks over shoulder for  Nige :lol: )

Regards Charles.

i got mine put into a cotainer. Main reason was that it was alot safer. i know the chap who is in charge of Land rover export at Southampton docks. They all go RORO. And he told me to put it in a container as the car will lose bits between the uk and aus .

It was also chaeper to put in a container as well. Cost was about £2000 but we got a 40' container and put the car in and all our stuff around it. That is for the 40' container and you pay for the container and not really what is in it . So if it is full it will cost £2000 and if it is empty it will still cost you £2000

The container took 6 weeks to get from Southampton to Brisbane. We used Robinsons international removers. Had some cheaper prices but found them to be more porfesional when quoting and did not feel happy about sending with a cheaper cowboy.

They charge you 3% insurance of the total worth of what you have . Bit of a mmmmm can cost you a bit and you think do i don't i . But you do and hope that money was wasted.

As for the Mohair Soft top. We found it no problem at all. Everyone said to us we would boil under it. Well going around Aus we never took the roof off the 90 or even rolled up the sides. Just drive around with the front flaps open. The roof does not heat up the car at all. Which i must admit surprised me too

Bring the shanky with you as they are worth a fortune over here. Also disco steels get about $500 -$600 for a set . So if you have some room :)

Well I am surprised how little the container cost....brilliant news.Of course rates do vary so I am not taking your advise as gospel.

Now contacted various shipping agents for quotes however, like yourself, I don't necessarily take the cheap route and at that kind of rate I'm more than happy to use your recommended carrier.

Hmmmmm40 ft that is a big container, pity all the furniture has been sold

Just give us a shout if you want to help me fill it with landrover bits.....sorry I missed Sodbury now.

Cheaper if you have not got alot of stuff to have a 20' container. Or instead of having a container to just your self it can be cheaper to share a container . Which is what we ended up doing anyway . Still sealed as southampton and not opened again untill Brisbane . So no real differance anyway

I'm awaiting the container quotes - week-end now. Plan tomorrow (sunday) to measure overall landy plus sankey length and confirm whether 20 ft will suffice or if I have to go 40 ft / share.

Reckon I'll ditch the truck cab as it will not be required in the security of the container.

if choosing to live in another state, rego rules are different, eg. in most of the other states a yearly rego check/vehicle inspection is mandatory. In NSW this includes a vehicle brake test and the CTP insurance component is separate to your rego and by private insurance companies, so you can shop around for the best quote. As my 'fender came from the NT, I couldn't just transfer rego, I had to obtain a major inspection from a specialist inspector (known here as a blue slip) before I could register it.

From what i have heard is that NSW is alot more difficult to get import cars into Aus than QLD . But as i have only done it in Qld i do not know. But know alot of Outback challenge trucks that come to Aus come in though Vic for that main reason

Ali / Rick.

We will be heading for QLD/NSW border area so what you say Ali will probably apply to us. At this time I'm not too worried about the differences between states but keeping this in mind if we decide on a different area so thanks for the advise.

Ali.

Got my quote from Robinsons thanks, 1.4 K for the 20ft and 2K for the 40ft containers from Southampton to any Port in Oz so you were spot on.

The prices exclude any import duty, handling / cleaning etc. Just for the hire af the container.

For exporting, what paperwork did you have to submit - understand about the V5 document to DVLA so they know what is happening to it, but what else do I have to do to make Australia aware I am importing a vehicle, did you leave all the paperwork for an agent to do or is it straight forward to do myself.

Thanks in advance.

To import you need to down load and fill in a file on here DOTARS web site. They are sort of the DVLA of aus.

You will not be able to load the car to be shipped with out the paper work from them. Remeber you have to send it to aus and wait for them to send it back. So count that into the timings.

As for heading to the QLD NSW border. get the car and stuff shipped to Brisbane. It is closer to the border than Sydney and easer to get the car into Queensland
