FridgeFreezer Posted May 9, 2007 Share Posted May 9, 2007 As the title says really - I know there are quite a few of you out there running MS'n'S / MS'n'EDIS so can anyone help me out with a fuel/spark map suitable for a 4.6 + EDIS to save me a bit of pratting about with mine? If yes............ then you need to run it at 2500 rpm for 20 minutes to correctly bed the cam and lifters together........... at no time during the 20 min period should it be allowed to run below 2000 rpm............. Yes it does have a new (stump puller) cam & lifters - are you serious about revving it for 20 mins? Bull Bar Cowboy Posted May 10, 2007 Share Posted May 10, 2007 I’m fairly sure your stump puller is a comps cams special …….. ground up for RS ……… Comp Cams…………………taken from here Comp.pdf Camshaft Break-in Procedure Important: On hydraulic and mechanical (solid) flat tappet cams that require dual valve springs, the inner spring must be removed during break-in. This allows the lifters to establish rotation and develop a good wear pattern. As soon as the engine fires, bring the RPM up to 2000 to 2500 during the first 30 minutes of operation. Slower engine speeds will not supply the camshaft with an adequate amount of oil for the break-in period. The engine RPM may be varied periodically between 2000 to 2500 to direct oil splash different areas of the camshaft. After the 30 minute break-in period, change the oil and filter again to be sure all contaminants and break-in lube are remove from the engine. The inner valve springs can now be replaced. I once read a crane article about the how the correct bedding in changes the molecular structure of the steel …….. all clever stuff and some of it was quite frightening . I’ll see if I can dig out the article ……… then I can scan and post. I guess your motor is running a little better than mine at the moment ! TomG Posted May 10, 2007 Share Posted May 10, 2007 Here's my latest: Setup is 4.6 with viper hurricane cam, tubular manifolds, no airbox (k&n into plenum) MSnS but with VR sensor mounted at standard EDIS position, 2-wire Bosch PWM idle valve in open loop, LC1 wideband (0-5v), ford gen.1 coil packs I think the VE map is ok (maybe AE is bit much), spark map is pretty advanced, doesn't pink on mine but you may want to back this off to be on the safe side. Would like to hear if i'm way out on any of the settings (hopefully not!) Ian, I mentioned the cam running in procedure to a friend who made this comment which seems to support your post: I've seen various things written about breaking in cams. The basic rule is not to let it idle. Obviously thats not easy with a new build but do your best. The reason is that until the cam and follower have a good working relationship, it's too easy to break through the oil film on a slow cycle. On a normal cam, the surface will scar fairly easily and yes, I have seen cams bu**ered this way.OTOH, if you're running a standard cam, not some playtex variant, the risk is pretty low.
