Transfer Box Donors

Recommended Posts

A potential project idea, we are talking small power and torque compared to some applications.

Say a max of 100bhp, but a lightweight aluminium engine.

Can any LR or other transfer box be removed from its original location and be attached to the back of an alternative engine and gearbox combination.

For arguments sake an engine and gearbox combination taken from a FWD donor and turned through 90degrees to run in a conventional 4x4 based buggy?

Simplest, especially if weight is your main consideration, is to use a suzuki transfer box, though they dont have a very "low" low range in comparison to say a land rover Tbox. But if you use some of the internals from a 1.3 tbox in a 1 litre tbox you can create a crawler box. There is lots of info out there on suzuki forums about such things. Or you could put your hand in your pocket and get Milners to supply one with the flanges of your choice....

Most transfercases can be converted to stand alone by cutting the back off their original gearbox, which contains the rear mainshaft bearing and fitting a seal in front. A new input shaft then needs to be made, or you may be able to cut and rework an old mainshaft. Hard bolting a transfercase to a different make of gearbox, aside for the adaptor plate itself usually involves some form of resplining to either the gearbox mainshaft or the transfercase input gear, except for many US transmission as they are usually ''bought in'' assemblies from a handfull of specialist manufacturers who tend to standardise more re spline configurations etc.

This was done once in Australia, had a couple of comps before being dropped. Never repeated to my knowledge.

The engine was beside the driver and because of the reduction of the front wheel drive diff, didn't need a transfer case to get the low gearing.

Seen lots of trials motors like this over the years, nice lightwieght solution, no high range though.

Here's an insane idea you can all have for free . Remake the fwd differential to have needle roller radial and thrust bearings on all the bevel gears, mount a brake to the outputshaft to the front diff, fit a dogclutch outboard of the brake to disconnect drive to the front propshaft. Apply the brake and the bevel gears will give you 2 wheel drive with a 2:1 overdrive.

yes,I should try to get out more

Niva TFER boxes are strong, light and have lower ratios than the Zuk ones

Are they easily detachable from there original homes?

And can they be made to fit on another box?

Also whats there availability like, Niva's are getting scarcer now in the UK?

nova boxes can be picked up without too much difficulty, i seem to remeber there bein something about making sure they line up properlly so you get no vibration?!?! i need to try and dig out the link again as i thought about using one on CosZuki before i changed my mind entirely. but they are very strong boxes, especially ppre 92 i believe as thats when they were properly made, as a russian told me.

dan that sig looks kinda familiar :D
