I've got a 1995 p38 2.5 diesel that has developed a tapping sound and its running on 5 cylinders, its quite loud and gets worse under load with quite abit of smoke and a strong smell of unburnt diesel from the exhaust. Has anybody any ideas or experience with this problem before? If this is a case of a replacement engine (as the noise is quite bad!) does anybody know if the 3 and 5 series bmw car engines are a straight swap for a range rover because i've been quoted £1495 for a range rover engine and thats out of my budget but i can buy a 3 or 5 series bmw car engine with a guarantee for £400-£600!? any help and advice gratefully received Thanks in advance.
