Whats the crack with Scorpion?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if I seem a bit thick, but I'm really new to the Land Rover family  , and, like a kid at Christmas, I trawl t'internet looking for ideas on how further to inflict damage to my already fragile bank account.

Why are Scorpion seen in such a bad light? I see that some people have little pictures of a crossed out Scorpion, and the words "dont buy from them"

What have they done? I read that they were flogging cheap Chinky copies of a tyre deflator thing. But are they notorious for this, or do some people just hold a grudge for some reason?

I have not purchased anything from them yet, but I am trying to compile a list in my head of company's to trust whilst in this initial stage of Landy ownership (read that as, "I feel like I have walked into a minefield, and dont want to be bent over and shafted, and taken for a mug")

Thanks guys,

once again, sorry if I have missed something obvious, and seem a bit dim

Firstly welcome to the land rover scene if thats what you want to call it , I call it a moneypit and a snowball.

"I feel like I have walked into a minefield, and dont want to be bent over and shafted, and taken for a mug")

A mine field it is , and if you want to buy your bits from Scorpion thats your choice , This forum is a bit anti Scorpion but if there is something you need you may find out where to get it and maybee cheaper and made to a high standard by asking on here !

No doubt some one will be along soon to give you the full story .

This forum isn't anti scorpion

but a fair few of the members are.

the difference on this forum is that people can voice what they think as it is fully independant funded only by its members.

This means no pay masters to appease, in the way other forums have.

they are a shower and deserve to go bust. cheating/chiseling and underhandedly running a company is no way to act.

It's a credit to this forum that it is independent and that people can say what they like.

There are people on here who have nothing bad to say about Scorpion, others who have a their piece to say.

It's one issue which people can hold strong opinions on, but it's certainly not the "company line" for LR4x4.

Isn't it about time we added this response to the forum FAQ / tech archive?

Godlykepower, welcome to the forum! As FF said this has come up a few times. Appart from the points raised above and the fact Si is a friend I found they're prices high and seemed to be plucked from thin air (that may be unfair but they gave that impression), their service lacking (not really interested unless you want to spend an aweful lot of cash!).

IMVHO there are companies out there who are better off to go shopping to. There are few companies out there that are perfect but you rarely hear a good word about this company. That said I do know a few people who've got on OK with them BUT they were VERY good customers!

First post - sort of scary...

Anyways, here goes - how about this: let's list the ORIGINALS and get together a "group buy" future kind of thing!

I'm sort of off-British-Islands-newbie-not-competing-semi-Chelsea-tractor-kind-of-person, but anyways: the only way of getting copycats out of the way is to get consumers to understand the value of what they are buying. 5+5+5+5 doesn't add up to 21...

Case in point - a few years and n% less brittle bones ago I used to race bikes downhill for fun. Cheapskate as I tended to be I used to get the cheapest option available, apart from the bike.

The *economy* just disapears as soon as your precious front wheel axle decides to shear in two... And this was on a bike...

Anyways - based on my precious few months driving a Solihull Rocket - getting good spares at a decent price seems like a thing worth investing some time into.

So - (and I've might missed this - if that is the case the Mod is welcome to Viritually spank me..., sorry!) how come you lot haven't banded up for a Sponsor/Discount drive? It seems to me that Regulars have a good relationship with the offended parties and, judging on the replies, the bad experiences with Offending parties seems quite frequent as well.

Short version - consumer power!

1stly welcome :)

2ndly.......... my gawd .....

you like to live life on the edge with views around 'SR' and 'forum sponsors' etc

Basically LR4x4 is fully independant,

we have no masters (cept us mods who have admin to keep us in check :P)

and thats the way we all like it

and the reason LR4x4 was born, but thats another story involving another 1st class pratt RG of LRE....

Anyway, we do have suppliers who have superb repuations,

(Dave at Ashcrofts and Si R at X eng as 2 examples...) and post both helpfull information, and support this website,

but they do it off their own backs,

and we all remain fully independant,

and that will always be the case here.

I think many are so sick of SR and their behaviour and ethics (or lack of) and as such enjoy their hobby 'SR-less'

Frankly if you need to buy something or want something ask here and many members will recomend who to go buy from.

SR here for many is just a bad taste that has not yet gone away completely

I'm sure a grown up will be along later to explain better....

I've had first hand experience with Scorpion and found them to be rude, unhelpfull and overpriced... + they don't really seem to know what they are talking about.. <_<

buy from them if you like, but don't post your complaints or sob stories on hear expecting a kind and understanding response, you have been warned so now its time to make your own mind up.

They have a good track record of ripping off smaller companies aswell, which is fair enough, and just business, but we don't have to fund it do we?

personally i'd love to see them go bust, and end up out on the streets... :)

Hmm, ever wonder if there are mystery shoppers for certain companies testing the water to see if their rep has changed? B)

Anyway, Godlykepower, as a bonefide prior customer having spent lots with Scorpion kitting my previous Disco up I can report with hand on heart with no bias and no prejudgement on business ethics so I can remain impartial*, the following:

The kit itself that I had was good, well made and I liked it.

The service was about as poor and arrogant as you could get without actually being offensive. Empty promises, random pricing (trust me, go to a show and get a "price" go back hours later and seek someone else, you will get a different price - I did 3 times! never the same) failed deliveries, items on back order when they were in stock at time of order, because they forgot to send it when I originally ordered it. Vague reasons and reassurances as to when it would show and shoulder shrugs when I questioned waiting an extra 3 weeks. Missing parts that were crucial to the build and rubbish excuses to the garage fitting the kit left me without a vehicle for another weekend.

Overall they would have to pay me to shop there again.

So this time around being more savvy I spent my £2k of bling with different suppliers and so far, I have nothing but praise for:

David Bowyer

Dave @ Southdown

First Four

Exeter 4x4

Exmoor Trim

Kev Baldwin at MudUk

Top products, knowledgeable and friendly people and first rate service. Just how it should be when parting with your hard earned.

*this is not judging anyone who does have an opinion, merely setting the stall out to prove I have a genuine axe to grind

I think a lot of people getting into offroading / landies for the first time, go the scorpion route. After all just look at their website, looks a lot more professional than most others and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the service would match. At the end of the day they market their products v. well, unfortunately some of their gear, while looking pretty trick isn't up to the job compared to some of their less well known competitors products

P.S. If you're planning on visiting the showroom to purchase something, make sure you've got a lot of time on your hands... Mail order rules!!

Hi,

I'm new to the scene too and have spent a bit of £ getting my truck up to scratch  . I echo the comments above about Dave @ Southdown, David Bowyer @ Goodwinch, having had truly excellent service off both of them :):) . I also had work done by QT and though it was of a good standard and keenly priced, they were also very helpful :) .

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong...but do Scorpian actually make any of the products that they sell?

The famous bumpers that everyone used to rave about used to be made in Italy. The strengthened drive train stuff like flanges, shafts etc are a mix of Ashcrofts, Maxi-Drive.

Cubby boxes are from Mobile Storage systems...I wish I had a mag close by to study it closer.

I don't think they stock any Scorpian exclusive products do they?

The philosaphy of this company is simply to buy in bulk and hike up the prices to the cheque book off roader who doesn't know any better than to buy everything at one time and have a truck looking exactly the same as every other one on the scene.....that TV show 4x4 is born was a typical example.

In saying that.....I bought one of their HD anti-roll bars about three years ago for the 130. I had an issue with it and was surprised to get a long distance phone call from them to sort out the problem. Tim also had a problem with one of their shock absorbers and they replaced it foc.

I'm against them purley because of what they did to Si and his well received X-Brake. If they did that to me I'd set Osama on him.

They advertise well and get a lot of product placement in magazines etc.

4 or 5 years ago I was after some bits and went to see them on their stand at Billing. I got ignored whilst they chatted, couldn't get any prices or information and generally was given the impression that they didn't need my business.

I walked away and wouldn't give them my money on the basis of that experience - and that was before I learned of their business practices.

Only dealt with them once myself. In which time the salesman was addiment that the TD Engine was never fitted in the 110! In the end got cut off when I said "What did they fit it to then, the coffee machine?" and would never deal with them. Most of my dealings now are through Paddocks.

Well, I needed a cubby box in a hurry so popped in there. It must be one of their own as it's not a Mobile Storage Sytems one so they do make some stuff.

I have used them quite a bit in the past, but in the last year or two have not used them much at all. Mainly because I now buy from different sellers depending on what they specialise in.

I still rate some of their products, but not others. This of course all based on personal opinion.

From a business point of view a company with premises in North London will always have bigger overheads than one operating out of a barn in the deepest countryside.
