Ben_J85JTY
Hi all, Been search through the forum all afternoon and think I have got all the facts together but just want to be sure........ If you want to fit a r380 gearbox to a 200tdi (in a Defender) you need the (very rare) shorter bellhousing and shorter input shaft r380 (50J i think) Now, apart from stumbling across one of these rare boxes, the other options are limitded Has anyone tried to "cut and shut" the LT77 and R380 bellhousing's...I.e taking the LT77 engine mounting face and the R380 gearbox mounting face and weling them together at the right distance apart? Assuming that can be done, how available are r380 boxes with the shorter inputshaft..? Cheers Ben
simonr
I fitted a standard R380 to a standard 200tdi. OK, you need to move the gearbox or engine mounts - but it's not a difficult job. Correct, not all the bolts / dowels line up perfectly - but sufficient do for it not to be a problem. The only change I had to make was the following. The R380 / 300tdi have a single bolt at the bottom of the bellhousing. The LT77 / 200tdi have two bolts - one on either side of the bottom. There is also a bolt at the bottom which holds the engine bit of the bell housing on to the 200tdi block. This conveniently lines up with the single central hole on a R380. Remove the original bolt, buy a L-O-N-G bolt the same size and in effect bolt the R380 directly to the block. Dont remember any other major mods being necessary. The combo went pretty well. andyb
I guess some of these differences must be a 'Defender thing'. In a Discovery I swapped out an R380 for an LT77 behind a 300tdi. Bell housing bolts patterns were all the same. Had to swap the removeable cross member and the speedo sender unit over but otherwise fairly straight forward. I'm probably not adding much to this discussion but I thought I'd 'share the knowledge'.
