Broken Winch

this is probably going to make a prat out me, however here I go..... I broke my X9 winch at the weekend (case and the main mounting the same side). I was going about removing myself from some mud, attached to another disco but I was pulling him back(not good) so my anchor disco gave a couple of tugs which resulting in broken winch! I think 2 mounting bolts failed resulting in big damage. Did I commit the ultimate winch sin or have I been unlucky?

Yes you committed the ultimate winch sin!

Or at least one of the ultimate winch sins... right up there with sitting on a taut wire rope with your crown jewels dangling either side of the rope etc etc.

You ain't the only one though, learn from the experience, don't do it again and be thankful nobody got hurt :)

Winches are NOT designed for any sort of shock loading like that as you have found out to your cost, steel or plasma winch cables have NO "give" in them at all and should not be shock loaded at all and definitely should not be used for towing!

Many thanks at least I know I've been a thwack!

Thanks for your advice and I will be very careful about dangeling the jewels over the winch wire, although I guess it might feel better with a nice soft plasma line?

Thanks again Bogmonster
