Hybrid_From_Hell Posted September 6, 2007 Share Posted September 6, 2007 Hi All, For some time now I have "Been a Watching" ebay for a single or even 3 phase Metal cut off saw, the sort that have a base table, and a motor cutting assembly on a pivot, which you then pull the arm down to cut whatever is in the vice.....normally this have a very slow RPM or 40-60 RPM... They also go for a fortune, and often are miles away....but I do keep watching and hoping .... So, I was just having a flick through the latest Northern tools catalogue that arrived and saw one of these : Item No 32552E-164 http://www.northerntooluk.com/products.asp?partno=32552E its says : "The world's first truly multipurpose Mitre S.A.W which cuts steel, aluminium and wood (even wood with nails), all with the same blade. Me Q is : Are these any good,?? Never heard od 'TCT Cutting Technology'...or seen it in action.... pugwash Posted September 6, 2007 Share Posted September 6, 2007 i konw nick walker picked up a good one for not "too" much money new- it may haev been a dewalt and it had a high speed cutting disc in it- it did the job pretty effectively. The blades are expensive - but if they are carbide tipped, if my experience of lathe tools is anything to go by, they should last a while! Orgasmic Farmer Posted September 6, 2007 Share Posted September 6, 2007 I used a Dewalt one with a TCT blade to help make a m,ates cage. It cuts quick and clean but it needs a small edge to work on. Thus starting and finishing is hard and seems to cause loads of heat. When the blade can chisel an edge of though it goes like stink. Very noisy, earmuffs recommended. I tried to cut some flat plate and it wouldn't even mark it. It was just a bit big to turn through 90 degrees or I guess it would have been OK. I had the feeling that after about 20-30 tube cuts the blade had lost its edge. I don;t know how much work it had already done though. The rake angle of the teeth is different to that of a wood-cutting circular saw blade (these ones have a negative rake, rather than a positive rake) They are really noisy, too noisy to use in a 'domestic workshop' They are more deisgned for sitework, and the blades don't seem to last very long. I think you are better off looking for a decent fluid cooled bandsaw, it will give nicer cut, it might not be as fast, but at least it will be nice and quiet, and you can leave it to get on with the job... I think she "May have mentioned" it - several times......hmmmmmmm .....Very noisy, earmuffs recommended..... Er .......... They are really noisy, too noisy to use in a 'domestic workshop' Ok...don't think my ears can take that much abuse (SWMBO - Not the TCT Cutter ) Back to Ebay watching for me then for a 50rpm one mit coolant...unless anyone knows of one for sale ? Like a hot knife through butter - and more to the point you don't get blade diostortion like a chop saw so everything is nice and square. To say nothing of saving your ears, not creating all that damn grinding dust and being generally more civilised. I'm dubious about those Rage jobbers. Seems too good to be true? I'd stick with an old cold saw. I will pm you a link which may help... Oh, can we get a Mod to move this to Tools and Fab? smo Posted September 6, 2007 Share Posted September 6, 2007 I bought one of these http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/...ive-cut-off-saw 2 weeks ago, i must say its fantastic, the base is a little flimsey, but its only £99 and does a fantastic job, i've cut loads of box, angle and flat with it, cuts quickly and squarely and even does mitre angles too - makes a few sparks and isnt exactly quiet but i didnt wear ear protectors and havnt gone deaf yet!! pugwash Posted September 6, 2007 Share Posted September 6, 2007 is it essential to have soem sort of circular saw? there's ben a few reciprocating liquid coooled blade saws (i have no idea what they are properly called) around which are reasonably priced second hand and will cut through just about anything. It's loud and some hot bits of metal make it out of the shroud and try to burn you, but wow it cuts fast. The carbide blades seem to last many many cuts. A chop saw of the same design would be great. It'll cut through 2" blue band in about 2 to 3 seconds, I've cut 50mm 6mm wall CDS with it and mitred 2" 5mm wall box all with no problems. The chips that come off it are bloody hot though so gloves, face shield and a melt proof jacket are recommended . I don't doubt it won't put up up with 'day in, day out' constant use, but I think its cheap for what it does. They do a more heavy duty cut off saw with a 14" blade, which I think is more steel oriented and the blade is alleged to last longer. Its about £30 more http://www.migtigarc.co.uk/Specialist/specialist.html is where I got mine from for the same price as Northern tool delivery was free.
