Coolant Leak

Hi Guys, this problem has probably been aired before however....

I have a water leak on my 97 Tdi, it is leaking from behind the water pump, presumably from behind the back plate. The question is has anyone found a way of replacing this gasket without removing the sump etc? :(:(

Many thanks in advance any help would be most appreciated.

One thing to add - we often replace the long bolts, if badly rusted, with s/s bolts which we keep for this purpose. As they are only tightened to 25 Nm it doesn't matter that s/s is not as strong.

Same applies to the 3 long bolts holding the water pump.

Otherwise the bolts may break when you do them up which can ruin your whole day!

Hi Les, the leak was from the 'P' gasket behind the water pump. For some reason I was under the impression that the backplate was all in one and removal of the sump was necessary. What a pratt.

New 'P' gasket and water pump gasket fitted in less than 3 Hours 'Thanks to the advice given' :)
