Anyone heard rumours that Land Rover are to make a special edition Defender next year for their 60th? Someone told me they are going to and it will be an auto too.

I searched the web but can't find anything.

I was talking to a bloke from Land Rover the other week and he reckon's the 60th Defender is loosely based on the 'SVX' concept from several years ago, he couldn't comment on the powertrain though.

I read that 2008 is the 60th anniversary of Land Rover, whats the chances of them sticking a V8 in the defender again as a special?

I was talking to someone in the know at LR about this only last week. To answer your question, the chances are none existant!

As was explained, bolting in a 'different' engine than the standard unit is a massive project for any manufacturer. To be able to sell any product it has be homologated, etc, etc, ruling out any form of interesting one-offs or limited edition on cost grounds. The 60th will only be sold in limited numbers, so the numbers just don't stack up for anything too radical.

The only reason the 50th Anniversary model got away with having a V8 and Auto was because LR already had the NAS90 model with that spec. 1998 was the year US legislation killed off the NAS90 in the states, therefore the 50th was a convenient way for LR to use up remaining stock of the NAS90.

I was asked what would I thought a 60th should be. After realising there was now way I was going to get the V8 diesel, all I asked was that they made the spec a true 'Limited Edition' rarity and not a parts bin bolt-on special that can easily be replicated. I also suggested bronze green for the paint colour.....

^^^ what he said. a mate of mine does a lot of work for mitsubishi and ford (with the ranger 4x4). apparently it costs about £30,000 just for the development costs of designing a new gear knob! so god knows what a total new drivetrain/vehicle is like!

@modchop: your info is correct. ;) But the engine is going to be the td4... And probably just manual... But they are thincking about the automatic issue aswell

Good feedback - not sure i like the answers, but they are really as I suspected deep down :(

Guess we will have to wait and see then .....a nice shiny v8 would have been nice though.....diesel or petrol ... i wonder if they couldnt find themselves 60 odd of the old v8 engine and bolt then in !! (oh no - the EU emissions jobsworth will have put paid to that !!!)

Its just that I really fancy a defender 50th, but if they were coming out with somethig really nice next year i could be persuaded to spend more and get something new....

I would like to see:

Galv chassis and bulkhead

Stripped out interior similar to Series Two

Full tilt and some rubber doofas to secure the screen when its down on the bonnet.

I like the 2.4 engine (apart from the bloody throttle) and manual box.

Wolf wheels and decent tyres

Kevs Bronze green and marine blue for colours.

New exclusive BBQ radiator grill.....

oh whats the point, it will be a parts bin rusty squeaky cock up whatever.

Will :)
