Hello,

If replacing a clutch on a 1996 300Tdi Defender. I'm sure I heard somewhere that its easyer to remove the engine? I would have thought that removing the gearbox would be the way to go?

If you have an engine hoist, then it can take the same amount of time to whip the engine out, as it takes to pull all the bits needed to drop the box.

Agreed.

You need a decent engine hoist with appropriate reach. Taking the engine out is a little more involved as you've got things like the cooling system, oil cooler and power steering systems to disconnect. Having done two clutches in the past 2 weeks on Tdis I've found it easier to drop the box - access is pretty good with a crane through the passenger door. You've got to remove the transmission tunnel, floor panels and centre seat / cubby, but the seat box can stay in place.

or move the gearbox rearwards but leave the front edge sitting on the gearbox cross member, Les H & me changed my clutch this way last year, more than enough room to swap the parts over.
