will_warne Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I've got some old plasam t clean up and was going to give it a wirl in the washing machine. What's the general opinion on soap? I know you need to put it on a cool wash but I can't remember hearing anything about detergent. Thanks, Quote
BogMonster Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I just dumped mine in a bucket full of warm water overnight (no soap) and then gave it a woosh around and a rinse off in some more clean water the following day. Seemed to work well enough, it doesn't look "new" but clean enough. And don't forget the "hook through the glass door problem" if you put it in a washing machine Quote
LandyManLuke Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 no soap. We clean the running rigging off the boat in the washing machine, cold cycle, no soap. Rinse any grit off first, else it'll act as an abrasive in the machine. Quote
Guest diesel_jim Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I expect Will's has got mildew on it from lack of use.... Quote
ciderman Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Dont forget to chuck it in the tumble drier after with a couple of Bounce sheets , It ll be nice soft and fresh as a summer meadow Quote
ped Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 cold wash no soap i find it easier with my climbing ropes to put it in an old pillowcase and then put it in the washing machine ped Quote
will_warne Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Thanks guys, no soap it is then. I get around the hook problem by cabletieing an old sock over it. Quote

JST Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 buckets or cold water no soap i use, then work the rope through the water opening out all the strands to get all the muck/grit etc out. but then mine gets little use of late anyway. Quote

D9OSV Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hi Will, The reason you must not use soap is quite simple. The rope is made from thousand of tiny strands and unlike a normal rope, plasma and the like require pressure and friction to hold them together, Thus if you use soap it acts as a lubricant and the rope will lose a massive amount of its strength as it's frictional ability is lost. There you are a nice tech reply and before 8 am Quote
Steve 90 Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Just spoke to Andy Tomlinson about cleaning my Plasma and then funnily enough stumbled across this thread. He says "Give it a good rinse in a bucket with a small amount of washing up liquid" Ive always used washing powder and when I asked if it may have harmed the rope Andy said "no, It might just leave the rope a bit sticky if not washed out properly" Quote
dollythelw Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 we either chuck em in the river and leave them to sluice out or do them in the bath, Ive never used soap but Andy Ts word is good enough for me Quote
will_warne Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 Thanks again for all the replies. Jim, that makes sense especially with most of the modern washing powders as they tend to leave a softening residue behind. I guess a little washing up liquid's fine as long as you rinse it out. Quote
ciderman Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 I wash mine in TFR then a bludy good rinse in evian or perrier or any other branded mineral water , Quote
