Trouble with McDonald remanufactured 2.5NA Diesel

Recommended Posts

if the injector bodies are loose, just tighten them up, or take them to a diesel injection specialist, they'll be able to cure the leakage & sort the spray pattern & working pressures.

good to read the engine is running OK now after having to sort the suppliers foul up.

Hi,

Not being an engine builder, just a thought springs to mind, was the position of the belt in sync with the rotation of the engine?

i.e. - if the belt turns clockwise was the belt two teeth out anti clock wise...? or visa versa...

I believe this has a bearing because if they continue to hide behind "the tow start caused the belt to jump" it can only jump one way...!

Good luck,

db

A quick update:

Marc from McDonald called me this morning (I did not need to call). He for the most part stands by the fact that the tow start is the likely cause of the belt slippage, but that 2 teeth out is unlikely to have caused any damage. He was up in arms about the faulty injectors however (supplied to him externally), and vowed to sort the issue out as quickly as possible. I am unable to part with the current injectors since they work, despite leaking slightly, as the car needs to drive, but Marc said he'd call the supplier none the less and get them to send me 4 new, (perhaps calibrated this time?) injectors, and get them to remiburse me 150pounds for the inconvenience. If that could not happen quickly, he suggested that he could send me a cheque for the same amount and then get reimbursement himself.

I'm disappointed that he refused to budge on the belt slippage (claimed problems as manufacturing was 'impossible', since the fly and fuel wheels were locked using special tools, and then the cam and crank set dot-to-arrow, and double checked). Said he could tell from the belt if slippage had occured, but couldn't since we're abroad. As far as i can tell, there's nothing to see on the belt. He was adament in trying to convince me that his engines were of the highest quality, and that he would do everything possible to sort this issue out as fairly and as quickly as possible.

Let's wait and see. I'm very curious.

Cheers,

Martin.

You could show me a brand new cam belt and I bet I could find what could be enterpreted as slip marks - what utter carp. At least £150 back is good news though. Interestingly, we had a new member with a very similar name to this company reading this thread in the last few days - makes you wonder........ <_<

I had a similar problem with a reconditioned engine in a 2.5 TD. The belt was correctly timed (and checked several times) when the engine was installed. The vehicle was driven approx 20 miles when it developed serious problems (loud popping noise through the airfilter, No power). Upon investigation belt was found to have jumped on the cam sprocket which caused the pistons to hit valves which then broke a rocker arm.

I spoke to the remanufacturer who were very helpful and said that it is not unheard of for the oil pump to stick slightly on intial start up which stops the cam from turning and the belt to jump. The pump then frees and all runs but with the timing out.

I got all the bits replaced free of charge and without any hassle. Which is why i would not hesitate to recommend Turner Engineering.

Pete.

£150 is cheap to shut you up maybe ?....but better than nothing

Whats the latest ?

Its one of the reasons I tend to either stick with quality compnaies that I KNOW are 100% fair and genuine (Ashcrofts, X-Eng, JE Dev etc) and if I am about to spend any large amounts of money I always ask 1st, hindsight can be F expensive

Sorry to hear about your experience with this company, and thanks for posting this on here, means that others can either decide to expect what you have gone through our spend that little extra for something better.

Glad you go it sorted and it is a shame for you to have had to have gone through all that
