smo Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 How do you go about working out the length required for a custom propshaft, do i just supply the length at rest or do i cycle the suspension to get the extreme lengths?? Quote
jericho Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Give them the 'at rest' length,as fitted to vehicle, and the length of slip joint required. I recommend Bailey Morris, who make props for Devon 4x4 and the orange extreme crowd. They made my double cardan front prop, and were the only firm I phoned who sounded like they really understood what I needed. Quote
smo Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 How do i contact Bailey Morris, is that a company or an individual? Quote
dollythelw Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I tend to cycle the supension to max compression (take a flange to flange measurement) and then max drop (take the second measurement) and then take third measurement at ride height. (Allowing a little extra travel for the slip joint is never a bad thing). Worth ringing Burgess of Bradford (aka the Propshaft Cinic), they've never let me down and normally the new props turn up either next day or a couple of days max. Its only personal experience but Ive always found them really fast, good quality and seriously helpful. Quote
smo Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 Cheers Jez, i'll give them a call too....anyone got a forklift spare to cycle the suspension Quote
muddy Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 anyone got a forklift spare to cycle the suspension Just drive up some ramps, tyres or and old car ect, that should do it Quote
biasbilt Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I can recommend Nigel from HJ Chard (builders merchants, but their propshaft workshp is very specialised), who are in Bristol. They are local enough for you to take the car to (which means no mistakes in measurement/misinterpretation of your measuremnts), and he is very knowledgable. He built the driveshaft for the 4x4 Aston and Jag used in the James Bond film a while back. FridgeFreezer Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Another vote for what Jez said - cycle it, add a bit for luck (you don't want to tweak the suspension and have to buy a new prop) and then call the propshaft clinic. Quote
