white90 Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 for ages now I've had a loud metallic crack noise from the rear of the 90 when changing directions (fwd/reverse) I replaced: A frame ball joint as it was worn radius arm bushes radius arm bolts shock rubbers the rear diff was rebuilt after loose crownwheel bolts were found prop u/js were replaced. I suspected the Maxi drive, drive members on the halfshafts after a few emails with Mal of MD he advised his very unlikely as the drive members I have are designed for the 130 L/R being 10mm longer with the halfshafts also increased in length. A conversation with a mate about the problem he suggested Loctite on the pinion shaft then refit the diff pinion drive flange. I did this on Monday and success! after nearly a year of listening to the crack noise it has gone. odd as the pinion flange was brand new genuine part. Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 odd as the pinion flange was brand new genuine part. Is that really surprising? Quote
BogMonster Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 interesting - my Discovery has a metallic crack/ping when changing direction, I might have to try that Quote
TheRecklessEngineer Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 So does my Discovery - I always put it down to the brake pads sliding around. Worth investigation... Quote
MJIbex Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 It's not just you or the Defenders. Locite on Defender diff pinion is a genuine bulletin fix, from LR, for this that affected a lot of 05-06 plate vehicles!!! I had 3-4 demos that need this from new. It's the same on a number of P38 rear drive flanges. Quote
TheRecklessEngineer Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Hmmm...i'm mostly a rookie with these differential type thingies....I'm not 100% sure, is the pinon shaft the shaft that goes into the diff, and the pinion drive flange the bit that the prop shaft bolts to? Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Yes - I thought a chap like you would know where his flange was Quote
mike4444244 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 lol when i had a loud cracks in the back of my 110 it turned out to be the tub/roof shifting as it held the chassis together on cornering Mike Quote
