just worked out that a LT85 is better for me, like looking for hens teeth though..... :D

Have you tried Santana?

IMHO, the late R380's are nearly as strong as an LT85, and better shifting.

are the defender and range rover versions of a LT95 the same?

anyone know before i buy one.

Defenders were never fitted with LT95's. They were fitted to 110' V8's up to around 1985 when replaced by LT85' 5 speeds which were ok but were a bit under nourished in the bearing department (fixable) and occasionally lost the circlip holding 5 th gear in position which tended to mess things up a bit. Having said that, many LT85's after modification managed to acheive 3 to 400,000 Km's in Australian conditions, even behind the brutally torquey 3.9 litre Isuzu deisels that were offered as an alternative to the V8.

What about the LT85 variants? 20C and 22C

As far as i know the 22C is a split case version with hatching on the side. vis:

20C (Solid case) is meant to be stronger.

Although mine is meant to be a 20C looks like the above but without the curved gusseted but rear of the oil level/filler plug

The strength info is 2nd hand info to me thou, can anyone confirm?
