IainDB Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hi, Just scraped some funds together to spend some much needed attention to basically the front axle full stop! Will start with the list of bits first that I know them to be called!!! 1. Swivel Gasket Kit 2. CV Joint (don't know if its 10 spline or 24 spline version!!!) 3. Wheel bearings (told to try changing these as tracking is out on camber of one wheel) 4. Any seals/gaskets that should be changed in the process. It's a 1993 Landy Disco 200tdi. VIN: SALLJGMF7KA061027 Can anyone help me with this list? Any bit you would replace at the same time etc etc.... I need to know part numbers and cheap places to buy (off the web). I know of Paddock Spares not sure if there is cheaper or not but just getting confused and want to get the right bits as my disco is indispensable for work and I can only have her off road over a weekend for the repairs!!! Would be very very great full of any help! Thanks Iain Quote
russ3120 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 pull one of the 1/2 shafts out and count the splines, but I am almost sure you have a 10 spline. try: mm4x4 discoparts rimmer bros craddocks dls and of coures there is ebay? Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 First off, before you get carried away - what are you doing and why? If there's a problem with the axle, then post up and people should be able to tell you how to sort it. If you're doing a strip & rebuild then the list changes. You ask where's cheap to buy parts - please note though that some parts are bets bought genuine as the non-genuine ones are made of cheese. Wheel bearings - if it's that bad you should be able to jack the wheel up and rock it, the play should be fairly evident. If the camber really is out (who told you, how was it measured?) then I would wonder if you've bent the axle or stub, have you done anything that might have caused this? (Heavy landing / hitting something fast etc.) Quote

IainDB Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 Hi, Thanks for replies guys n gals!!! CV joints I have come to the conclusion of myself, there is a tremendous clicking coming from the front when ever I am turning at slow speeds. Bearings I have listened to the words of an HGV Fitter at work. He said that it could be the bearings and no measurements have happened I just assumed the wear would let them sit out of true??? The passenger side wheel is like new on the outside edge but not far from showing the wire on the inside edge and the drivers side is wearing evenly. The Swivel gaskets are obvious as more oil seems to reside on the road then in the balls!! Have just jacked both sides up. The passenger side (one with the worn tyre) has a slight bit of movement all round gentle clunk can be heard and the ball is only weeping slightly. The drivers side one (one with evenly worn tyre) moves a lot and oil freely dribbles out of the ball as it's being wobbled. Everything seems to point more to the drivers side with clear problems yet the passenger side tyre is giving all the wear and tear!!! I havn't knowingly hit any bumps or had any hard falls with her, but then I have only had her for 3 months so it could be a previous owner I don't know. How would I know if the axle was out? Would the bearings really cause the wheel to wear unevenly?? Once again ideas would be great!! As said funds are limited so I can't throw it a maybe!! Thanks Iain Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Daft question, is the tracking out? Since you can't adjust the camber but you can adjust the tracking (and it can be put out by bending a steering rod) I'd check that before dismantling everything. Quote
IainDB Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Not sure if the tracking is out or not... But surely the bearings giving loads of play would set the wheels up wrong in the first place??? What bits do I need to buy for replacing my cv joints, swivel gasket kit and wheel bearings? Thanks Iain Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Not sure if the tracking is out or not... But surely the bearings giving loads of play would set the wheels up wrong in the first place??? True, but I don't think they'd stay in the wrong place long enough to scrub one bit of one tyre, when a wheel bearing has play in it it moves around depending on where the wheel's pointing, if you're trying to turn a corner, etc. the wheel would be changing from pointing in, out, up, down etc. in sort of equal measure. Also I'd be surprised if a wheel bearing with that much play survived long enough to wear the tyre out. Quote
thebiglad Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Hi IainDB, I have just done this front axle refurb job on my Disco Tdi200 and my advice would be to purchase for both sides: 1. Swivel bearings; 2. Wheel bearings; 3. New hub nuts and washers; 4. An axle gasket set; 5. New brake disc mud guards (they will probably be shot and are quite cheap to buy); 6. Swivel pins top and bottom. I bought everything from www.paddockspares.com Hope that helps. Ps While your about it considor replacing the steering ball joints and check to see that the steering box drop-arm is well secured. Mine wasn't and the car drove like a pig as a result. Quote
Les Henson Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 If you go off road I would advise removing the old mud shields and leave them off. They trap stones against the brake disc and make a really annoying squealing noise. Les. Quote
IainDB Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 Hey everyone, Thanks for the advice! Have bought new bearings, all seals and gaskets and cv joints. Will see how that goes tomorrow. Gonna have fun!!! Luckily have a fully equipped workshop to use with anything you could dream of needing and some mechanics on hand to help me if I get stuck!! Thanks once again and will let you know how it all goes!!! Quote
IainDB Posted November 4, 2007 Author Posted November 4, 2007 Well had a fun day! Started at 10am and finished off at 9pm!!! Yawn!!! She drives like a dream now, no shakes, clunky noises and pulls in a straight line. On dismantling the hubs and swivels I found the top swivel bearings on both sides to be collapsed and loads of play in the drivers side cv joint. Used the guidelines of replacing the hub seals etc from the tech bit on here very useful!!! The only problem I came across whilst replacing everything was getting one of the cv joint ends to stick out far enough to put the circlip back on. I tried a bolt through it and tugging it with a rope and it wouldn't budge. So I resolved it with a bolt a chain and a trolley jack! Not in any mechanical book!! I left this right to the end with all the wheels back on and removed the center cap off a wheel for. It involved bolting the chain to the disco on the cv end and then bolting it round the handle of the trolley jack. I then ran away from the hub with the trolley jack in hand and it pulled it out perfectly. I also replaced my radiator today which means no more puddles of water when I stop any where. If anyone is going to undertake removing the swivel and hub for the first time, please make sure you have a complete day without interuptions, there is lots of bolts to remove. Once I had done one the second became alot easier and quicker as I knew my way round. I have gone for using grease in the hub as I plan to off road her and wanted something more resilient to water ingress. Now all I have to do is weld up both inner wings a small patch on the boot floor and a patch under the rear seats, then diff seals and a service!! She will get there in the end. If it didn't have a problem it wouldn't be a land rover thou I suppose! All the parts cost me £230 from paddocks which isn't bad really considering £100 of it was the radiator. Thanks once again guys for advice and suggestions it helps get the brain ticking over. Iain Quote
