Hi all, just wanted to make a quick introduction for my fiancee and I. We're both from Birmingham (the UK version that is...thankfully years of intense electro shock therapy have got rid of the accent ) and we've just sold our two runabouts (one workhorse of a Nissan Sunny Estate and one slightly tired Corsa) in order to pool our finances and buy our ideal vehicle: a Land Rover 90. Somehow, I've managed to find a woman that grew up around decent cars and that has always wanted one as much as I have...Lord knows how I managed that. ;)

Our LR is a 1986 model, currently housing a rebuilt TD engine (new crate block just a couple of years old now). However, the TD is coming out very soon as I now have a 200Tdi Disco engine sitting in the garage ready to shoe-horn in.

Being a bit of a restless s*d who doesn't let the fact that he is a below average spanner-monkey stand in his way, I've decided to do a few things to her when I'm taking a break from my other project: cramming a VH45DE Nissan V8 into my incredibly stationary Nissan 300ZX (2 years and counting so far... :rolleyes: ). I've got to keep costs down to a minimum so most of the work, including the engine swap, I'm tackling myself, with the help of my best mate when it comes to the tricky stuff that's beyond me. My big thing is working with fibreglass so I thought I'd take a crack at making the cockpit a nicer environment to be in. I've just started sculpting a new dash which I'll hopefully be flocking with my home-made flocking machine (Heath-Robinson-tastic ;) ). I've got a couple of old 300ZX seats which my better half is recovering in leather to put in, along with a selection of aftermarket gauges and a very reasonably priced carputer with GPS navigation...which will hopefully mean I never get lost again as my sense of direction is appalling.

Exterior wise, I'm currently looking for a spray gun as I've decided to have a crack at respraying her myself. I've just bought a gallon of black satin "truck paint" from Jawell, which is down the road from me, so hopefully, when I've got the panels once again dent and corrosion free, she'll look a bit more like. Having a few friends in the custom metal fabrication game is also a boon because, as if I'm not doing enough (did someone say glutton for punishment?) I'm designing a stainless steel snorkel that has an in-built cone filter sited outside the bay which means it'll hopefully have the benefit of a ram air effect, drawing cool air in rather than hot, engine bay air, and negate the worry of water ingress if it ever goes wading somewhere a bit on the deep side.

Well it keeps me off the streets. :)

No doubt I'll be bugging you all with daft questions, if I exhaust the Search facility, before too long.

Cheers,

Leigh (& Lucie)

You don't muck about do you? Some good stuff on the project list, like the sound of the dashboard. Mind you, I also like the sound of the Nissan V8 - why not switch and put that in the Landy? :P

Satin black - are you a PPC reader? ;)

Brave man! Good on you for having a go at it and for doing it your way. (doffs hat)

Look forward to hearing all about it in future installments.

Cheers for the welcome guys. :)

Over the years I've slowly been won over to the "function over form" camp when it comes to exterior work (with the odd digression in the form of SS snorkels naturally ;)). She was originally going to be Matt Black but the cheapest paint they had was the "blingy" satin so I had to settle for that instead...a bit garish if you ask me... ;)

Had a nice suprise when getting in today...the carputer has arrived. Being a bit of a Luddite I just have to now resist the temptation to operate it with a sledgehammer if it doesn't work.

Mo Murphy: ah yes, the ubiquitous "Friday". It's been my "other" self for too many years to mention now, and it's even seeped into my music work. If anyone fancies their ears bleeding, have a looksee here: My MySpaz Band Page (very soon undergoing a complete name change).

FridgeFreezer: What is now known as "THAT b*stard engine"...2, nearly 2 and a half years of working with my best mate, and lots of custom work later (no b*gger has been stupid enough to do one like this before):

(suffice to say the dry sump tank won't remain in the bonnet for long!)

Hi Leigh,

I don't feel qualified to 'welcome' you as I'm a newcomer myself, but good to have you along all the same.

Can you tell us a bit more about the carputer...sounds interesting.

Thanks

John

No problem John, here's the spec:

Case has:

* PS2 Mouse port

* PS2 Keyboard port

* VGA video

* 9pin Serial

* Parallel

* USBx2

* Network/ethernet

* Microphone, speaker and headphone

And comes with:

*256mb RAM

*80gb hard disk

*1Ghz CPU

*Customised Media Engine screen/desktop/booting screen

*FM sound transmitter, wired into PC's power supply

*Wireless USB

*DVD drive

*GPS device

*Powered USB hub

I got if off Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=110179076643

I went for the uprated version which was a little more...but not as much as his asking price. Haggling is fun ;)

Once i get it up and running (just sorting out what power converter I need as although it comes with an adapter to plug in a car cigarette lighter I want to initially power it up off the mains to check everything is ok and install what needs installing).

HTH :)

Leigh.

Glad you're liking the tunes Martin :) Soon going to be officially changing the name (and of course the page) from "Kyoto Underground" to "This Burning Age". I lose all my MySpaz friends in the process but I feel more comfortable with the new name so it's definately going to be worth it in the long run :)

And, as I have nothing better to do (well, actually I have a lot I should be doing but this is a convenient distraction ;))...here are a few reasons why I like Matt or Satin black... (the eagle eyed among you will notice that the penultimate car is a Nissan Z32 or 300ZX as they're more commonly known over here, owned by a fellow member of my other car club. I liked his so much I'm going to give my own V8 Z32 the same Matt/Satin Black treatment...functional but at the same time damn good to look at IMO ;) )

Hi guys,

I am likewise a newbie to the forum :D ... and I am sure I will also ask many daft questions that have already been asked a million times before...(sorry in advance ;) I am sure the rest of you will nudge us in the right direction- maybe without too much swearing??!! :unsure:

I am liking the satin black...but for me smooth black hammerite is the way forward!!! It sprays on beautifully- even when sprayed by a complete amateur like me.

Best of luck with the first two vehicle based projects, and if you manage to complete them without the final marital based project moaning too much then you are a far better man than I, and I bow to your superior project management skills!! :D

Hey Friday! Welcome to the forum! Aside from the county-bodywork, it would appear your truck has a twin in my humble wagon...

Be sure to keep us all posted on the works!
