My 200tdi defender's oil light comes on at idle when it gets to normal operating temp. Someone said it could be because of oil, so I changed it (& filter) today. (castrol high mileage engine 15/40 oil) Unfortunately it has made no difference. Someone else suggested it could be worn big ends, but it's not got a noisey bottom end. Another suggestion is it could be a dodgy pressure sender?

If I only drive a couple of miles, ie engine stays pretty cold, the light stays out, likewise, if I crank the engine idle up, it goes out aswell.

The engine has 170K on it.

Suggestions please bearing in mind I'm not a millionaire!!

Sender next then if it still flickers the oil light --- slightly increase the idle revs to 750 to 800rpm a rev counter will help, mine did this a quick idle revs adjustment cured it.

I have tweaked the revs to get light out but I want that to be a short term fix. To get the light out, revs are definately too fast, (by ear only).

I will get a new sender 2morro. Will I loose oil when I unscrew sender? (never done one before).

only a little, wait till the engine is cold to avoid getting any hot oil on your hands.

what mileage has yours done ? mine over 390,000 & doesn't put it's oil light on at idle even after a long motorway trip.

Assuming all electrics have been checked.

Oil light on at idle and goes off when the revs go up. Most likely the rear camshaft bearing has moved in it's housing. To check this is the case, remove the rear side cover plate and either have a feel around or shine a torch in there.

To repair is an engine out and specialist job as the camshaft bearings will need to be replaced as a set and line reamed to ensure camshaft turns corectly. In itself not an expensive job but taking the engine out and refitting could be.

Thanks (I think :( ), I changed the sender today as suggested by Western, seems to be ok now but I only got it up to about half way on the gauge and it will go to just over halfway. The revs could still go up a tad if needs be. Tomorrow we will see some lanes and this will be the test. I obviously live in hope but thanks for you advice, sounds like you know your stuff as I see you have a link to turner eng.

Thinking about this a bit more, I think I may need a new rad? Arn't 200's supposed to run pretty cool? ie, just below half on the gauge?

If it's getting too hot, oil will end up like gnats wee I believe?

mine standard tune, hardly ever goes above a needles width from the halfway mark on the temp gauge
