Gents,

Started reassembling my front axle swivels and got to fitting the upper swivel pin bush (on my 1986 90).

Noticing the cut away area has to face the right direction I found on double checking on the old swivel I had already taken the old one off to use as a drift for the new one (without taking note.........donut! :P ).

No panic I referred to the workshop manual and it showed the cutaway facing towards the diff.

Made a coffee before proceeding and I remembered the November LRM had an article with lots of coloured pictures carry

ing out the same job.

Looked on Page 106 and there on step 17 and 22 they had pictures and an Important note showing the bush facing the other way!!

Confused I had a peak on the other side of the axle still in its original condition and confirmed that the cutaway area faces the diff.

To my eye it looks like the cutaway is such so that the bush doesn't interfere with the swivel oil seal.

I double checked with Les and White90's swivel articles and it looks like I fitted them correctly.

With the swivel housing off (the heavy bit) it could be assumed the the cutaway would face inside to clear the casting but I still think it is to clear the swivel oil seal.

So, am I about to be corrected and eat some humble pie :o or has LRM got it wrong? :P

Cheers for your comments.

Tha magazines are forever getting tech stuff wrong.

sometimes even putting the wrong captions describing different vehicles!

I'd take what they say with a pinch of salt and double check with a proper manual.

much of the tech stuff in LRO is total bobbins, the article this month about transplanting a disco 200Tdi engine into a defender must have been written by someone who has never done it before....

Having just done this, the cutaway profile faces the diff, so you are correct and LRM are wrong. No surprise there then :)

If the bush housing is fitted the wrong way round it fouls the swivel housing - preventing the steering from working. If you try to force the steering to turn with the bush in the wrong way round it can cause the swivel housing to crack.

Typical brainless magazine rubbish.
