2 wheel drive freelander

hi all my T plate 1.8 55k miles freelander has just started playing up

Went to landrover specialist they told me my vicous coupling (not sure i spelt that right) has seized and has damaged a transfer box ( may as well be in klingon to me )

any way they have quoted £1600 approx to replace the parts

I was speaking to a friend who reckons you can disconnect the prop shaft and run around in it as a 2 wheel drive vehicle without any major drawbacks

I asked the landrover specialist and they said you can disconnect the rear propshaft however they wouldnt do it .

Any one done or know of any advice regarding doing this.

I cant afford £1600 at the moment specially with xmas and 2 kids

any advice appreciated

Yes you can as the Freelander is effectively only 2WD on the road anyway, until the front tyres start to slip a bit. However if it has damaged the IRD ("transfer box") that may not solve the problem. Also it may lead to nasty handling in slippy conditions - hard to say - and the insurers might take an interest if you had a prang in a modified vehicle.

Hi

I did this a couple of years ago when the prop failed on my company freelander, it felt just like a front wheel drive car but suffered from torque steer.

Hitting a manhole cover when accelerating up a steep hill in the wet could make the steering pull sharpish!

Ran it for the summer and put the repaired shaft on for the winter. Im pretty sure the coupling is seized on it by the way it scuffs when turning on gravel but havnt driven another to make a comparison.

If it's the IRD (the transfer box) that has gone its too late but if its OK take the rear prop off and it will still be fine but don't work it too hard as you will damage the IRD

The IRD is £500 + vat ish and fitting in the book states around 8hrs to remove but can be done in four and my racers we could do it quicker than that.

the Viscous is around £300 but can be found for much less and is easy to fit yourself.

What is it doing

I tend to smash the casing or sherr the main shaft in the IRD

I reversed off my drive - was left hand down full lock then it made a loud bang. whenever it is on full lock forward or backwards makes a banging noise when the wheel turn.

garage told me the transfer box had gone as well so reading above i guess its too late even to try the 2 wheel drive option

dont really want to risk a normal garage if i did have it done rather get a landrover specialist to do the job its a lot of money may as well have it done right

uncles mechanic going to have a look for me on monday see if disconneting to prop shaft will work or if its to late

even if i get it fixed dunno if i should keep it or not now

been a bad end to an expensive year for my cars ( wifes mx5 had a new engine in few months ago)

loved my freelander now tempted to buy an series landrover and learn mechanics

I wouldn't trust a normal garage to tell me the time..

It's not a broken the CV's is it (long shot)

Freelander are being broken up all the time so a second hand IRD unit is a cheaper option.

whats your location

I too far away to help...

Ring round the LR/4x4 breakers and you my find somthing but remember a recon unit is only £500 so don't pay over the odds for a second hand unit.

A good honisty 4x4 garage should charge no no mer than a few hunderd to fit it but I don't know the area up there.

Little update - Had the prop shaft removed and seems to be running fine. The guy who removed it recommended another garage who work on drive trains of freelanders a lot and he reckons using sourced parts job could come in around £400-£500

so will see what happens after xmas

thanx for all the advice if it goes bang will let you know

  • 10 months later...

A mate of mine has just bought a 1.8 Freelander, (which is better as he actually as he went tp get a jeep).

Apparently he did not look underneath and it seems he bought a 2wd version (ie seller had removed rear prop)

He went and bought a prop a few days ago from an nice chap in essex who was breaking his freelander, and when it went on (the chap let him do it there) it did not work properly.

He was getting muddled up as to the exact nature of the problem, but Im assuming its the bearing on the output of the IRD (or is this the viscous unit on the freelander)..

What is the most likely causes and should he leave it as it is (noting previous comments in this thread) or get a recon/exch or second hand unit.

Thanks

NIc

They are mostly front wheel drive, the rear end is geared lower so the front pulls the back wheels along slightly. I'm running my freebie as front-wheel-drive and it's fine - unless you're actually going off road I'd save the hassle and just use it with no prop.

So I had the loud bang too :( .

The IRD unit is broken, removed the plug in the unit and looked inside, the gear moved 1cm left and 1 cm right. so i'm more or less sure it's the IRD unit.

Removed the axle to the rear wheels, I can still drive with front wheel drive. Because of the load is of the IRD gears now.

Does anyone have tips how to remove the IRD unit of the freelander without dismantling the entire bottom  .
