Safest way to check 4wd working

Firstly apologies if I should have put this in the Series forum but I wanted as wide an audience as possible.

While out over the weekend a couple of comments were made that it appears that I only have rear wheel drive on the truck. What's the best/safest way to check, axle stands under both axles to just lift it off the deck or is there another way?

Oh and yes I had engaged 4wd :P (i'm a bit disorganised but not that bad)

Series. Engage center difflock, handbrake on and just jack ONE front wheel off the ground. Now try turning this front wheel with your hands. It will turn a bit while it takes up transmission slack but you should get to the point where it turns no more. If you can keep spinning it you have a problem.

Eh?

Being pedantic, a series truck doesn't have a centre diff, let alone a difflock...?!!

As he says though - engaging 4wd then jacking up one front wheel should tell you whether it's working or not.

to be even more pedantic,

MOST series trucks didn't have a centre diff, but at least one had both a centre diff and a diff lock (2 if you count military series trucks)

If it is a free wheeling hub gone , Give me a nudge , I have a brand new set of Selectro hubs in the garage , They are a coarse spline , Not sure if its 10 or more , They are yours , If you want them , Just make a donation to the forum .

Oh and you have to get them .

just checked and it would appear that I do not have drive to the front wheels.

On to the next questions:

I checked both front wheels with hubs locked and in 4wd (both high and low) neither are driven - does this mean both hubs are knackered or would one broken one be enough (i think I know but worth checking.

these are the hubs fitted, is it worth trying to repair or should i replace/throw in the bin. Not bothered about having them to be honest they were just fitted when i got it

Like I said above, one broken hub will stop drive to both wheels.

With one wheel jacked up, both hubs locked and 4WD off turning one wheel should cause the propshaft to rotate. If it doesn't the fault is in the axle. (With a broken axle the prop may rotate slightly due to friction, if you can hold it still with one hand the axle is bust)

Engage 4WD and if the prop still rotates the 4WD selection is bust

Jack both wheels and hold the prop still. Rotating one wheel should cause the other wheel to rotate in the opposite direction if all is well.
