Les Henson
300TDi that gives out quite a lot of grey smoke when the engine is under load such as towing, going uphill. Fuel consumption is higher than normal, oil consumption is ok, and water never needs topping up. Have any of you had any experience of this symptom and can give me any pointers please? Thanks. Les. M005
Sounds like someone has been playing with the fueling mix trying to get more performance Wind it back a bit and see if the smoking reduces, fuel consumption follow.

Les Henson
No-one has messed with the vehicle. The owner is an eldery chap, and has owned it for quite a while. I'll check the pipes etc. Les.
JimAttrill
Grey/white smoke looks like low compression. On a diesel this causes 'retarded' firing and the unburnt diesel comes out the back. Compression should be 24bar when new, though 20+ is good. How well does it start from cold? If it is hard to start and then chucks out white smoke that smells of diesel the compressions will be low. Even with low compressions a 300tdi will normally start well when hot with little smoke.
Les Henson
Starts ok apparently Jim, higher fuel consumption and the already-mentioned smoke. Les.
JimAttrill
I 'tweaked' the injector pump on mine long ago and noticed no increase in fuel consumption. A mate of mine reckons the same. If you 'overtweak' you get BLACK smoke, anyway. Dunno how you can do it, but it is important to smell the grey smoke. If it has a nauseating smell, it will be oil burning, otherwise if it smells like diesel... A little oil goes a long way when it comes to making smoke. A real 'clutching at straws' thought. If your bores are worn it may be possible for diesel to contaminate the oil, so you will show no apparent oil usage even though some of it is burning. On the idea that you should check the cheapest things first, I would reckon a compression check should be done - certainly before mucking about with expensive bits like injector pumps. Getting the injectors checked is also cheap. I had my spare set adjusted and the diesel specialists said they were opening at 185 bar instead of 195. The tips can also be changed if the spray pattern is out of kilter. A few years ago they used to say that neither of these actions were possible, but the diesel guys are more jacked up today.
