Hello folks - new to this forum - from north notts

I have just started rediscovering my SIII, its been at the bottom of the garden under leaves and branches since i put it there in a small temper after the engine gave up over a year ago when i had even less spare cash than i do now.

I have in the shed two dead 2 1/4's and in the process of removing a dead (never run actually) 2.5NAS - i put this in when the last 2 1/4 failed - was smoking for a while then the head gasket went. but this 2.5 has never run whilst i've had it.

Is there anywhere i can find out more about the engine types (i have a few manuals but i just wanted to know the major differnces before i try to get one of these running or start searching for another.)

I have a 2.5NAS - engine number 12J

I know someone with another engine - not sure what it is he says engine number is 18J...

I have a SWB SIII on a W plate.

Thanks

Tony,

Brief history of diesels fitted as standard to series land rovers:

bit weak mechanically and a bit underpowered but not too thirsty.

A bit more detail but not 100% on when actual change over took place

Series 1

2 litre disel 3 bearing which is not really suitable for modern daily use

Series 2a and Series 3 (early)

2286 3 bearing engine which was adequate in a lighter rover but would struggle to haul a heavy 109" at greater than 50 mph

2286 5 bearing engine as 3 bearing but a bit more reliable

All identifiable by the fuel pump in the same position as the distributer as the petrol engine.

5 bearing engines identifiable by engine number ( can't find the manual ) either 301 or 901 or something

That's it for series diesels (though land rover did experiment with direct injection turbos in the 60's)

Now, when the 90/110 came out the 5 bearing diesel engine was warmed over with the pump moved to t he front side of the engine running of the new timing belt, capacity was upped to 2.5 litres.

Still not powerful but was ok reliable and worth sticking with unless you need the extra power. This is the 12j engine (I think)

Later they strapped a turbo on = bad idea - the block wasn't up to it and was an unrelaible engine for many years until the block was redone. This is the 19j I think. 19j being the begining of the serial number

The later version of this engine was ok.

Then..... the TDI.(200 and 300)

Great engine; looked after good for 1/4 million miles. Threre were timing belt issues but these are sortable.

after that came the TD5 and the Dcti, both of which I know nothing about other than they have electonics.

Longer than I thought.

Gottago.

sorry, forgot to add :

ORIGINAL ENGINE NO,S READ AS FOLLOWS 12J 493*26 can't make out the fourth digit as to badly ground down!

someone has done a right job to those numbers ( be careful that engine may have gone missing at some time in its dubious history!)

I'm not going against the theory of 'possibly stolen & re-numbered' at sometime in it's pastt, but the renumbering is very badly done if it was intended to hide something.

What I have in mind is the way the Factory dealt with rebuilt gearboxes in Series vehicles. Here they ground the number off it's original location, then added a new one elsewhere. However, perhaps because the factory had nothing to hide, the original numbers can be readable. Mine were, which is why I came to learn about this Factory rebuild & renumber business.

British Leyland had their Gold Seal and Silver Seal engines. Did LR have a similar system? As the 12J with turbocharger became a weakness they might well have had a goodly number of engines available for rebuild.

Alternatively, weren't LR engines used in London Taxis and Leyland (Sherpa?) vans? Did they have a different numbering scheme?

I'm afraid I have no definivative answers, only observations and questions.

Nevertheless, HTH.

Looks like i'll leave that one then - thanks for the help guys.

(next question where do i find a running 2.5NAS .................)

Hi,

i am in the process of overhauling a 12J, just went over and had a look but on that picture it sure doesn't look like a 12J

the number seems to be on the other side and the fuel pipe mounting seems to be angled differently with respect to the glow plugs. Why don't you send a picture of the whole engine.

Im sure we can figure it out then.

greetings

Is that a 24volt 2.5nad?, that might explain the odd prefix on the engine number.

From the pics it looks like it has a belt driven vac pump, original gear driven one in way of the 24v generator? bigger pulleys on crank and waterpump. Oh and a turbo spec block.

Any idea how to determine what vehicle /yr these engine numbers are from below... apparently 1980's 100's, military.... but I can't tell if these engine numbers can determine year of vehicle or other info ??

1. E 18J 00030; C233565

2. E 18J00528; C226574

3. E 18J 00375; C231058

Reviving an old thread but I was surprised to see on my new VIN documentation that my engine number is down as an 18J as well. This is supposedly a 1987 ex-Singapor military and had the huge 24 volt generator (gone now), the nasty Spanish belt-driven vacuum pump and bigger pulleys for a wider belt. Exactly as in those photos, in fact.

I have a 19J on the shed floor and the only major differences I can see, other than the obvious turbo, are a completely different breather system and subtly different injection pump.

Number 4 in the post above is an engine number remarkably close to mine. They can't have made many as the highest number there is only 00633!
