stripy
has anyone put a landcruiser 4.2 turbo diesel with auto box in to a 90? or has anyone got any links or info i could use please? a friend of mine (with no computer) has a landcruiser which will cost alot to get through another mot he has a 90 challange truck & has wanted to go auto for some time, we know its going to be a heavy lump but it should pull like a train . thanks john
tacr2man
I think you will find no one has , the l/c six whichever version is a very long and heavy lump, and the auto box is no where as good as the zf item, for controlability, and sophistaction , tends to hunt up and down when towing heavy or up hill. When worked hard it does about the same mpg as a RV8 . It does put out good torque as it is a fairly long stroke engine. For safe handling you would need to move it well back as otherwise it would be extremely front heavy like the MGC HTSH JMHO
pugwash
it will pull like a train. these engines are the sister engines to the toyota boat engine (1fze i beleive) which make 240bhp alledgedly so they are good for some tuning. Just make sure he's done the BEBs as they are a known weakness between 125k and 150k. auto box is far more reliable than ZF version- stories of FJ80s in Oz doing a million miles or more are not uncommon on one engine and box. Box is just as easy to work with as a ZF item, shifts on demand, although in low box it doesn't shift as quick as you might like. weight is one major issue. i have no idea how much that engine/box weighs, but it would probably rival a 6.2GMC diesel in weight terms! transplant would give a brilliant drivetrain but i reckon you risk blowing your axles up quite frequently as then 4.2 has a LOT more torque than either a td5 or an RV8- well over 350lb/ft! edited: to change 350bhp to 350lb/ft- as much as i love my truck not even i reckon it has 350bhp! stripy
he was thinking about changeing the axels over too, that sounds like what he was hoping to hear B) whats the BeBs ??

Nick )Rogue Vogue) might be along soon, he has used (Toyota?) axles in his RR trayback and broken CV's on successive comps! Hopefully he might have some info
bazza
I run a Landcruiser 4.2 td with auto and all i can say is its brilliant. 190,000miles on the button and without fault, autobox is a pleasure with plenty of power. The Big end bearings do suffer on higher mileage engines, changed mine at 170,000, only one set had some metal fatigue on the white metal the rest were fine but i have seen some that are really knackered at 150,000 and it doesn't seem to be related to service history. The auto box does need a little fiddling to make more user friendly in low range as the ecu remaps the gearshift pattern when in low (basicallly does not change gear until high in the rev range), i thinks its called the "7 wire mod" or something like that. basically by removing one wire from the ecu harness the ecu does not know your in low and sticks to the normal gearshift. for more info on the engines etc see this link I put a Nissan 3.3 6cyl diesel with 5 speed patrol box in a 110 tipper, brilliant truck loads of power, shame the chassis rusted away around the engine and box! Old Spot
I helped to put a 4.2 Landcruiser engine into a 110 for a mate last year that he has just driven down to Afria and back in the last few months, the engine was mated to an R380 with the short input shaft ment for the R380 replacement of the LT77. The Landcruiser bellhousing was then cut to lenght and a plate drilled to suit the Landcruiser gearbox welded to the gearbox end before being milled flat. The only mechanical problem was the weld braking due to being welded by someone who thought they could weld ally! I have the SD 33 Nissan in my 90 and if spares were more avalible I would throw all Landrover engines in the scrap bin and replace with 6cyl Jap engines! Thats should stir a few! quite agree with ya. What starter motor are you running? i could not find a 12volt starter for the SD33 so converted the 110 to 24v. Old Spot
Im running the standard SD33 starter, alternater and injection pump control (easier to wire up than it looks) at 24v, the only thing that I have yet to get working is the fual gauge. Heater motor and wiper motors are 24v military items., the whole electrical system is loads more reliable at 24v and headlights are the best I have had in a Landrover. bobtail4x4
Hmm I have a FD33 in the bobtail, where did you find the wiper motor?
Old Spot
Hmm I have a FD33 in the bobtail, where did you find the wiper motor? Speak to Jeff Hobson at Hobson Industies, they have lots of 24v stuff (and sailsbury front axles!).

Old Spot
WHat gear boxes are you guys running with the Nissan SD33...?? Have any of you tried the Aussie bolt on turbo kit...??? Mine is standard LT77 with 238,000 miles on it at time of conversion and another 30,000 since conversion! There is quite a lot of slop in the main box output splines so im expecting to have to change it soon. We tried the nissan box in a 110 with the SD33 and the ratios never seemed right whatever size tyres we tried. I got the basic adapter casting from the guy who has taken over the conversions from Milners, the casting was good but the guy knew nothing about the conversion or the other parts needed. We used the Patrol 5 speed box, Range Rover axles and 7.50x16 tyres, worked really well. bit tight getting the box in there though!
