Removing front differential

As a brandnew forum member I'm desperate to place the next question:

I have a '91 Defender and bought it also with the purpose to get to know it inside out.

So I refuse to let it be fixed at a workshop (untill now).

I have a 'klunk' (free space sound) in my front axle and-or differential and want to remove the differential to investigate it.

I got stuck by the part where I have the get also the shafts out of the diff. I wonder how much I have to remove from the side wheels ( not to formiliar with the english tech. terms).

I saw the illustrations of the member that replaced it broken shaft on the rear (very nice explanations). But what about the front shafts?

Anybody willing to tell me before I demount to much then necessary?

First off check its not your prop UJs or your cvs

I had rebuild my front diff few months back.. from memory

1 put front axle on stands

2 remove wheels

3 disconnect front steering linkage

4 disconnect front prop

5 drain oil

6 remove the bolts that hold the swivel to the casing

7 pull out hub assy about 3-4" and support on another axle stand

8 repeat 6&7 for the opposite side

9 remove diff

are you sure the clunk is in the diff?

is it more apparent ahead/reverse turning/straight?

Well I removed the prop shaft and could turn the differential feeling clearly that there is some lose space and the belonging clunking sound. If its in the diff or in the shafts is what I want to find out.

Thanks all for the replies,

C.

Changed my 110's front diff recently, did it almost the same as listed above, but pulled the hub/swivel/halfshaft completely out & stood them hub down in the front wheels, just get the studs in the holes on the wheels, they will stand there quite happily.
